Bradford MP David Ward calls for action on social care problems
7:00am Friday 11th January 2013 in News
By Dolores Cowburn, Bradford Chief Reporter
David Ward MP talking to Lawrence and Barbara Brocklesby at the Carlisle Business Centre after presenting his study
Major reforms of social care funding are needed to tackle issues facing the elderly including hospital discharges, the provision of housing for the disabled and waiting times for major adaptations to homes, a survey by a Bradford MP has found.
The study by David Ward (Lib Dem, Bradford East), called Reforming Social Care, found that vulnerable people with disabilities and those living with extended families in the Asian community are among the groups facing growing difficulties as funding is stretched to cope with an ageing population.
The findings were revealed yesterday at Carlisle Business Centre to a group of voluntary organisations and Baroness Liz Barker, who sits in the House of Lords and replaced the Minister for Care and Support, Norman Lamb MP.
More than 90 people, including representatives of Bradford Alzheimer’s Society, the Disabled People’s Forum and Bradford Alliance on Community Care, gathered to hear Mr Ward talk about the challenges facing Bradford Council and the National Health Service in tackling social care reform.
“The issue of discharges from hospital and the lack of preparation for people to return home was raised,” he said.
“In some cases carers are not even contacted before people are discharged. This needs to be looked at.
“This is not a political statement, it is what people have told us.
“The draft Care and Support Bill was published in July 2012 and we are now talking about one in three people over 65 developing dementia and this is likely to affect everyone directly or indirectly.
“We have to deal with this and this is not going to go away. It is not like the recession, and the problem is going to grow and grow and grow.”
Baroness Barker described the report as excellent. “I think it has brought a desperate group of organisations together to really look at the main challenges and every MP should be doing this,” she said. “I think it will have an impact and the key thing to remember is the diversity of the population in Bradford. We know the system needs to be sorted and fixed.”
The report summary states support was found for improving prevention to keep people out of the care system tempered with concern this might be undermined by budget pressures.
The findings will be discussed by the Joint Committee on the Draft Care and Support Bill and they could be added to the eventual legislation.

There's only one thing for it, the government will have to raid the contingency fund it sets aside for invading countries and buying bigger and better nuclear weapons and pour it into care for the ageing population. All that healthcare, pills and potions, anti-drink and anti-obesity campaigns they keep feeding the elderly makes them live longer and has a cost in the end. All this hand wringing about where will the money come from is pathetic. Get your priorities right. Care comes first, invading countries comes last.

But I often wonder how people like him (and her) 'stomach' being in a party which espouses one set of values (usually when not in power) then does the opposite when IN power. To be fair it goes on in other parties too!
Politicians like DW and ST must be 'tearing their hair out' trying to show their own 'values' locally, whilst embarrassingly having to explain away the actions of their own leadership.
But which ever way you look at it, it 'stinks' that those incredibly well-heeled 'leaders' lecture the rest of us about 'drawing in our belts' and then cut the already meagre incomes of those 'at the bottom.'
And the latest 'disclosure' that a large number of MPs (34% of Tories for a start) believe the MPs' income should rise by 30-40% 'beggars belief!!'
If democracy is ever in danger it is likely to be because of the antics of our elected 'representatives' (??!!) themselves!!

Re the gun supplying Asian(s) of whom one I believe worked at a law firm, the councillor's family involved in a scam re energy drinks; decent families would disown these scumbags and actually hand them over to the authorities. Shame on these minority of Asians ruining the good name of the hardworking, honest majority.

And the reports are not weekly in this paper.
They have become daily and sometimes thrice daily.
As this week shows, where not a single edition has not had a report of large prison sentences handed in conseqeunce.
Look at the faces.
Read the Evil.
See the evil etched in their contorted faces.
Hanging would be too good for this lot.
The police have had enough.
Bradfordians have had enough.
Judge Durham has had enough.
He recently stated that one day the police will get lucky and the Mr Bigs will face justice.
For now the pawns are offered up as the sacrificial lamb.
Looks like honour killings apply not here.Or Halal slaughter.
We all wish it did.

Honourable man.
I have now been visiting my mum (82) with dad (patially sighted) (83) for 9 days following her fall and hip break crossing a shockingly repaired stretch of carriageway under highway authority control.
Neighbours have advised it"s been like that years whilst Bradford weeps.
I have not missed one visit session lunch and night.
Horror stories from the other elderly on the wards everywhere.
Staff worried overworked uinderresourced everywhere in both wards she has been in.
One 85 year old waiting since 9 December to go into respite in Cleckheaton.
Interviewed 7 elderly woman all with hip or other fractures all with the same horrific storyies.
Moral rock bottom amongst staff.
13 hour days for them.
Times only two on the ward.
Bells understandebly go unanswered.
Wailing as pain relief is delayed.
Frontline staff brilliant angels is the message, but simply not enough of them
No or delayed support for when home.
No fresh air for these ladies at least 6 weeks for one,my mother none in 9.
Constant coughs develop consequentialy.
Not one of the 8 responsible elderly ladies spoken to have had their hair washed in the time in BRI.
All people like your and my mum with dignity removed.
Dreadfull stories dreadfull city dreadfull corruption.
David Ward is right.
We are facing a mountain.
Saw a lad in their who had half his leg amputated.Late twenties.
Mother had a knee replacement in there end August and while having some air picked up on his heroin wretched features as he made contact with another (female similarly wretched)to see if she could help him score.
The methodone did not work anymore.
$ months on his face looked fresh and well.
His leg was gone.
Another victim of the filthy basta*ds dealing in this dreadfull drug that finds its way from Afghanistan through the Pakistan border on its way in containers of cotton goods and other elaborate means to the streets of Bradford.
Filling councillors families with the ill gotten spoils as they drive their Bentley Convertibles their Audi 8"s and afford mansions our Wool merchant forefathers could only dream of.
Disgusting.
Sunk lower than a skunks ars* this place.
With a smell tenfold worse

I find that an interesting statement as I have thought that Asian people were far better at looking after family particularly elderly than the rest of us.
