New group formed to protect Scholemoor Cemetery

Waste dumped at Scholemoor Cemetery Waste dumped at Scholemoor Cemetery

Growing anger over “inexcusable” fly- tipping and general waste being dumped at a Bradford cemetery has led to a group being set up to try to combat the problem.

The Friends of Scholemoor Cemetery organisation has already had one meeting and will get together again in the coming weeks to try to tackle the problem.

Bereaved families have been faced with dumped materials on pathways – including car parts, mattresses and household materials used for home improvements – when they go to visit their loved ones.

The problem at the grounds in Necropolis Road is understood to have got worse after the registrar offices were closed in July. Some of the cemetery gates also remain open all night to allow people to visit their relatives at all hours.

Ghulam Rasul, the registrar at Bradford’s Council for Mosques, said it was happening on a regular basis.

He said that debris from gravediggers carrying out their work could not always be removed quickly because the cemetery bins were full of fly-tipped material, leaving families distraught.

“They are shocked and they shout at us,” he said.

“We can’t always move the mud straightaway because the baskets and bins are too full of rubbish. It makes our bins heavy and that is a big problem.

“The Council are doing their best but they can’t be there 24 hours a day. We used to lock the gates but then people wanted to visit really late so we decided we would keep it unlocked.

“All sorts of stuff is left, including tree branches, rubbish from home improvements, and all sorts of rubbish.

“It is not the majority, only a few people doing it.

“When we are digging graves they think we are getting rid of stuff, so they think we can get rid of theirs as well.

“But we have to pay to remove it. We have this problem in the Muslim section, but it is happening all over the cemetery.

“It is people who cannot afford to dump their rubbish and they take it to the cemetery instead. Why can’t they take it to the recycling centre?

“It is something that I cannot understand. The only thing we can do is educate people and we have this group with volunteers meeting to address it.”

Councillor Andrew Thornton, the executive member on Bradford Council with responsibility for cemeteries, said those caught fly-tipping would be dealt with through the courts.

“To dump things in this fashion is inexcusable,” he said. “I wasn’t aware that it was reaching this kind of level but knew we had issues with fly-tipping around the district. “Anyone with information can call the Council on (01274) 431000.”

Very simple solution, Bradford council install CCTV at each entrance, link it to the camera room at Britannia house and that will sort it. Cheap and effective.

I reported my neighbour for throwing his household rubbish over the cemetery wall. I saw him do it from my kitchen window.I was outraged!
He does not seem to know the meaning of the word respect.

I thought I would have had at least a call saying that they were dealing with it.
Scum that dump rubbish in the cemetery should be dealt with or they will think they can continue to do it!

It would be interesting to see figures showing whether the money the council charges households for collecting certain items like tellys and fridges raises more money than they spend clearing up fly tipped ones.

That is the key word in the problem here... RESPECT.

In fact it is the lack of respect at all levels that is the root of the majority of problems in Bradford. Whether it is arrogant and illegal driving, parking on restricted areas outside schools, metal thefts, gravestone and stone thefts, blatant day-light drug-dealing..... a total lack of respect by many individuals is destroying the society and fabric of this city.

All that will do is give you some pictures (usually of dubious quality), there are already thousands of such pictures but very few prosecutions.

When I reported seeing fly tippers in Queensbury they were on the scene within minutes and apprehended the culprits in the act...and they (the Council) rang back later that afternoon to thank me.....

Add my agreement as well. Not even self respect is evident anymore with the way kids cover themselves in ink or metalwork and the way they talk to each other. It's hardly any surprise that we no longer have any values. The whole county is in a mess with its 'not my fault' and 'blame someone else' together with ' claim for some compo'....what a waste.

It really is a terrible thing that people have the idea this is ok for them to do. I know it wouldn't apply to these low life, but as the bins have not been collected regularly over Christmas, I sought a tip on new years eve, which according to the council website were open. Alas, they were not, so had to return my bin bags to the garage until saturday. I did see though some people had taken to leaving theirs at the tip gates. |come on council boys, if you cant pick up as normal, which is understandable, at least have the tips open!

Take your Bradford tints off moobs. The outer districts of Bradford which are flowing with whites are also suffering from fly tipping. Take a walk up baildon, the moors or head off to the streams near Leeds Bradford airport and you'll see tipped stuff everywhere! Wake up you pathetic racists. Shame to call these racists English as you are nothing but fascists who should be dumped into the channel.

News flash

CCTV seems only effective to prosecute motorists!

The authorities know the dodgy scum don't give a monkeys about fines and don't even bother turning up to court. Most agree to pay around the minimum of £7 per week if they get a fine.
The motorist and average citizen who is law abiding are cash cows and easy to prosecute, whilst the scumbags don't give a hoot and getaway with various acts of poor behaviour.
The authorities and the Police are not fit for purpose
