A Bradford couple received the perfect present on Christmas morning – their first baby.

Kayne Thomas Hunt seemingly wanted to wait until the big day. He was due on December 11 but was not born until 6.14am yesterday at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Kayne, mum Laura Holmes, 28, and dad Darren Hunt, 26, did not even have to miss out on the festivities as they planned to go for Christmas dinner with family and show off their new son shortly after being discharged at lunchtime.

With the baby being late, Laura was induced twice, on December 23 and again on Christmas Eve, but it seemed like Kayne was destined to be a Christmas baby.

The couple, from Eccleshill, did not know the sex of their baby before he was born, and his arrival starts off an exciting year for the couple, who plan to get married in August.

At BRI yesterday, care home worker Laura said: “We were expecting him two weeks ago, exactly two weeks today.

“We were hoping he’d come on the 23rd, but instead he came this morning.

“He just has to get his heart listened to, hopefully everything will be fine and we’ll leave by 12. We’re going to Darren’s mum’s for dinner.”

Describing him as a perfect Christmas present, the proud mum added: “He’s been good as gold.”

His dad, a plasterer, added: “He hasn’t cried once. Everyone has been waiting to buy his gifts because they didn’t know if he was going to be a boy or girl.”

The couple joked that Kayne would be the perfect pageboy at their wedding next summer.

He was one of four babies born on Christmas Day, with the first arriving shortly after 1am, keeping maternity staff busy.

Midwife Carol Dyson said they could never predict how busy the ward would be over Christmas.

“It does vary, we are either very busy or not – there are no half measures,” she said. “When they are straightforward we try to get the mums and babies home in about six hours.”

Airedale Hospital at Steeton, Keighley, was less busy yesterday, with only one baby born in the morning.
