Yorkshire have stamped on reports that Sussex have registered interest in signing Anthony McGrath as a replacement for Chris Adams, who has joined the Tykes as captain and head of professional cricket.

McGrath, who was unhappy with the way Yorkshire were being run, will have further talks with chief executive Stewart Regan over the next couple of days and a final decision on his future is expected shortly.

The T&A reported on Monday that the indications were Bradford-born McGrath would stay with his native county.

Dismissing reports that Sussex had made a recent approach over the key batsman, Regan said: "When we were negotiating to bring Chris Adams to Headingley, Sussex chairman David Green and coach Mark Robinson made the point that it would leave a big hole in their batting line-up for next season.

"They asked if we were prepared to negotiate a player-exchange deal and if McGrath was available. They were told categorically that he was still under contract for two years and the club had no intention of releasing him.

"Since then, there have been no further discussions with Sussex on the subject. Talks with Anthony are progressing well and we should have something to report in the near future."

Yorkshire have now confirmed they intend to bring a second overseas player to Headingley Carnegie next season and that details will soon be finalised.

Meanwhile, former director of cricket David Byas is still considering whether to accept his new role and the likelihood is that he will stay with Yorkshire.
