A night-time blaze at Cottingley Working Men’s Club, Bingley, would have burned it to the ground without a swift call to emergency services early today.
A fire crew from Shipley was first at the scene of the 3.30am fire which took hold in the club’s snooker room and filled the building with smoke.
They contained the flames and were quickly joined by a pump from Bingley, saving the single storey detached building in Hope Hill View from destruction.
“Luckily someone heard an alarm going off and we got there before the whole building was alight,” a fire service spokesman said.
