One of Bradford’s landmark pubs reopens next week after a £150,000 make-over – and it is celebrating the new look by having its old name restored.

When the Park Hotel, in Keighley Road, opens its doors on Saturday it will be as The Turf. And licensee Stuart Carr wants to hear from Telegraph & Argus readers who can help him piece together the pub’s past.

A pub has stood on the site for more than 100 years with a foundation stone above the door dating the ‘Turf Tavern’ to 1894.

It was built opposite Lister Park after a toll road was created between Bradford and Bingley, suggesting it might have been a coaching inn.

Mr Carr, 42, said: “We are really keen to find out the history as we have very little information.

“I am very excited that the pub is going back to its original name. The Turf is what my generation remember it by and it is great we are going back to it.

“We’ve no idea where the name ‘The Turf’ came from. It makes you think of a patch of grass or something to do with horse racing, but we haven’t a clue what the link could be.”

Wear Inns, based in the North East and Yorkshire, bought the Park in October and shut it at the end of November for the refurbishment to take it back to a more traditional look.

The pub will be stocking cask ale from some Yorkshire micro-breweries and dishing up locally-sourced food. Mr Carr is also hoping to re-start sporting teams there.

“We want to get back to having sporting teams and would consider football, pool, darts or indeed any suggestions for other activities from our customers,” he said.
