A masked man who blasted a shotgun into the air to try to terrorise a family he was in dispute with has been jailed for seven years.

Father-of-two Kamran Hussain lost his temper and threatened to kill two brothers in the street before firing the weapon.

Many people were on the street celebrating the end of fasting when the shooting took place in Hollings Road, Girlington, Bradford, at about 10pm on July 31.

Witnesses said Hussain pointed a double-barrelled shotgun, with shortened barrels, into the air and discharged it. No-one was hurt.

Sentencing the 28-year-old Hussain at Bradford Crown Court yesterday, Recorder Patrick Palmer said: “There could be no justification for you having such a weapon, no lawful purpose. You took it out on the street in an attempt to terrorise the Asghar family and you discharged it. That must have been a terrifying incident for them.”

The court heard Hussain had fallen out with the Asghar family. There was ill feeling and there had been incidents of violence.

Rafiq and Shafiq Asghar were walking in Hollings Road when they saw two men coming towards them. One was Hussain, who had a scarf over his face and was hooded.

Prosecutor James Keeley said Hussain was showing the community who was boss and that he was not to be messed with.

Hussain, of Broom Mills Road, Farsley, pleaded not guilty to possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and affray. He claimed he had been at his parents’ home celebrating Ramadan when the gunman opened fire. But the jury of seven women and five men yesterday unanimously convicted him.

Recorder Palmer told him he would serve half of the seven-year sentence before being released on licence.

As he was being sentenced, Hussain smirked at two men in the public gallery, who gave him the thumbs up.

After the case, Detective Superintendent Dave Pervin, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “The length of the sentence handed down to Hussain reflects just how seriously both the police and the courts view gun related crime.

“This man attempted to take matters into his own hands to resolve a dispute. He clearly did not anticipate the consequences of his actions.

“Using a firearm to cause fear or intimidation simply will not be tolerated in Bradford.”
