Revised plans to provide a new school building at an inner-city primary school are to be determined this week.

Councillors deferred the application to replace Princeville Primary in June after concerns about the loss of well-used playing fields and inadequate levels of parking which could lead to problems for residents.

Members of Bradford Council’s regulatory and appeals committee asked education bosses to look again at its proposal for the Willowfield Street school in Shearbridge, Bradford.

New plans have been drawn up following consultation with residents and ward councillors.

These include relocating the main car park to the south east corner of the site, enlarging the grassed area to the rear of the properties on Telford Court, and creating a play area fronting on to Princeville Street.

In addition the footprint of the building involves some minor alterations, but its siting is relatively unchanged. Furthermore replacement sports pitches will also be provided at Spencer Road.

A new report to the committee says: “The existing buildings are very old and comprise a mix of existing buildings and portable buildings. The buildings are in a poor state of repair and have been previously altered and extended on a number of occasions and are no longer fit for purpose.

“It is not considered that the existing school buildings can create an educational environment that is required for modern day educational needs. The provision of new buildings will provide a more modern environment for the pupils that will provide a solution to meet the educational and accommodation needs of the pupils.

The first phase of the planning permission involves the new £2.6 million modular building assembled on the site, a second application could then see a second building be added to the site, and eventually the old school building demolished.

The whole scheme was designed to allow the school to increase its intake from 60 to 90 pupils in each year and is part of the Expanding Schools Programme.

Officers are recommending the amended plans be approved by members of the committee which meets at Bradford City Hall on Thursday, at 10am.
