Inquest opens into death of Cleckheaton man in road pile-up

An inquest has been opened in Newcastle into the death of a Cleckheaton man following a three-vehicle pile-up on the northbound carriageway of the A1.
Nigel Sowerby, 37, was driving a Volkswagen van which was involved in a crash with a BMW car and a Citroen car, near Felton, Northumberland, on Monday morning..
He was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.
A passenger in the van was taken to Wansbeck Hospital, Ashington, for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The BMW driver suffered minor injuries while the driver of the Citroen escaped injury.
A 49-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has been bailed pending further inquiries.
