Remember, it's little more than a week since our front-page splash headlined "Miles and miles of misery in M62 roadworks chaos costing millions".

We said: "The true scale of problems caused by major roadworks on the M62 can be revealed by the Telegraph & Argus today.

"Since work to construct a managed motorway began a little more than a year ago, highways officials have been forced to remove more than 1,500 broken-down vehicles and deal with more than 100 crashes in the short stretch between junction 25 at Brighouse and junction 27 at Gildersome – a section that includes the M606 turn-off at junction 26 Chain Bar.

"The £150 million Highways Agency scheme, due for completion before 2014, will involve opening up the hard shoulder as an extra running lane."

First report at 7.20am today from our reporter Chris Tate:

There was chaos on the roads this morning after a collision on the M62 eastbound between junctions 26 and 27.

Eyewitness reports say at least two vehicles  - a box van and flatbed truck - were in a collsion in the fast lane on the motorway. Emergency services had closed all three lanes eastbound and they are not expected to re-open until at least 10am.

Traffic was snarled up to the Chair Bar roundabout by 6.45am with further queues likely.

There were no immediate reports on casualities, but all three emergency services were at the scene of the incident.

Emergency services from Cleckheaton and Odsal could not reach the scene due to the road repair crash barriers between junctions 26 and 27, which meant vehicles could not move out of their way.

But firecrews and an ambulance from Morley reached the two vans by driving up the hard shoulder on the other side of the concrete barrier.

Video: And that's why the T&A is a newspaper. Wow that's a bad video. It doesn't show it how it was like this morning at all. That looks like it could have been filmed yesterday. Plus the camera is shakey and goes out of focus near the end. Did a 16-year-old intern film it on their mobile phone? Stick to professional photos please

Sat on the m606 this morning for over 2 hours, dont understand why the m606 is left open when there is nowhere to go when reach the bottom, surely diversions away from the m606 should be made when there are so many problems with the m62.

ok bright spark, how does someone get onto the westbound M62 without going to brighouse?
all eastbound traffic should have been re-routed via the euroway to bierley or back onto staithgate roundabout and the right lane kept clear for westbound traffic.
when the build-up at the bottom was cleared more could be let through for those going to dewsbury/cleckheaton

Frankly if the M62 is shut then all around Cleckhuddersfax is screwed - the sooner they finish those works the better, and they should stop closing the road for every bump! Shut it for 10 mins, get the injured to hospital, then once the PEOPLE are ok bulldoze the scrap in to the ditch and deal with it at 2am when it doesn't cost thousands of hours and countless litres of fuel in jams.
