Could Bradford pair be oldest married couple in the world?
10:00am Friday 2nd November 2012 in News
Kartari Chand, who is 100, with her 106-year-old husband Karam
You might assume anyone aged 100 would be the eldest member of their family.
But amazingly Kartari Chand, who celebrated the milestone birthday yesterday, has an older man in her life – 106-year-old husband Karam.
Mr and Mrs Chand were married in India in 1925 and celebrated their 86th anniversary earlier this year.
Their family have now written to Guinness World Records asking if they are the oldest married couple in the world.
The couple, who have eight children, 27 grandchildren and more than ten great-grandchildren, settled in Bradford more than 40 years ago.
Through family members acting as Punjabi translators, Mrs Chand said she was thrilled to reach such an important birthday.
She said: “I feel happy. On my 100th birthday, I’m here with my family.”
Mr and Mrs Chand live with their youngest son Sat Paul and his family in Washington Street, Bradford. It is this Indian tradition of keeping the generations together under one roof which the Chand family says helps keep the couple youthful. Mrs Chand said there was no secret to living to such an age and that it was down to “God’s grace”.
Her husband turns 107 later this month and the family has a huge joint party planned for the couple.
