Man is held after pedestrian killed in Riddlesden

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a pedestrian suffered fatal injuries in a collision early yesterday.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at 3.23am in Riddlesden, Keighley. The victim’s name has yet to be revealed, but police say he was 47-years-old and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 33-year-old man was arrested shortly after and later bailed pending inquiries.

The area’s residents woke to find the roads around the junction of Bradford Road and Grange Road, near the village’s Co-op store, were cordoned off until 8am, but many were unaware a person had been killed.

One Grange Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I woke up at about 7am and could see there was a police cordon already up. They were taking it down at about 7.45am. I didn’t hear anything over the evening. It’s so sad to hear.”

Keighley town councillor Andrea Walker lives on Bar Lane, near the accident site, but did not realise how serious the incident was until later in the morning. She said: “I saw the flashing lights through the bedroom window and thought at first it was a robbery at the Co-op or the nearby hairdressers. I didn’t think much more of it. I heard a banging noise in the night, but I don’t know if it had anything to do with this.

“The road is usually fairly quiet in the evening and isn’t an accident black spot as far as I know. My condolences go out to any family of his.”

Police say the car involved was a Volkswagen Sharan, travelling in the direction of Keighley from Bingley.
