SIR - I believe the recent Stern report on the economic effects on global warming is just an excuse for the government to apply yet another stealth tax.
The report was authorised and carried out by the Treasury Department. Stern himself is an economist not an environmentalist.
It's got to be remembered that greenhouse gas emissions are not just a UK problem but a world problem, and considering Britain accounts for only two per cent of global emissions, it's difficult to see how invoking green taxes will make the slightest difference to the environment.
The DEFRA report of January 23, 2006, shows the UK to be on course for meeting its Kyoto target of 185 million tonnes (carbon equivalent) emissions by 2008-2012. In fact at the end of 2004 Britain had exceeded this target by over three per cent.
Greenhouse gas emissions are down 14 per cent since 1990. Britain is doing its bit on the global stage, so why is there a need to penalise the great British public?
No green taxes, PLEASE!
