The Bulls might yet face Widnes Vikings in the Carnegie Challenge Cup after it was revealed Hull FC are being investigated over a claim they fielded an ineligible player.

Bradford were last night drawn against Hull in the quarter-finals and are due to tackle them at Grattan Stadium on the weekend of May 31/June 1.

However, it is believed Hull prop Jamie Thackray featured in their fifth-round win over Widnes on Sunday while unregistered.

They re-signed the Great Britain international from Leeds on March 27, more than three weeks after the initial Cup deadline, and he played in their 32-18 victory over National League One Vikings.

Thackray, who was a member of Hull's Cup-winning team in 2005, was also a try-scorer in his team's 42-5 fourth-round success at Rochdale on April 20.

The RFL are now investigating and if Peter Sharp's side are found to have breached the League's bye-laws, they could be fined or actually expelled from the competition.

Widnes admitted they would be delighted to take Hull's place in the next round.

"We are aware that Hull played an unregistered player and we're waiting to see what the League have to say," said Widnes operations manager Pat Cluskey.

"We will abide by whatever decision the League make, as we did with our nine-point deduction."

Widnes point out that they left two players, Richard Fletcher and Sam Barlow, out of their team because they were signed from Whitehaven and Huddersfield respectively after the Cup register closed.

"We did a lot of work prior to the game checking the eligibility of our players," added Cluskey. "Had those two players been available, it may have been a different result."

I think it'd only be right. Widnes left players out of there team due to been ineligible, so you cant just go against the rules and get away with it. Bring on the Vikings

I didn't think Hull were the cheating kind perhaps its a bit like accidental offside they didn't mean to do it, now if it was WHINO'S then yes I would kick them out and find them a games takings, but there again I have my reasons for 8ting Leeds after my daughter was spat at when attending an international match there wearing her Bulls shirt in the world cup

Disgusting!

I can't see the RFL having the bottle to kick them out of the cup, despite how fair it would be.

Alas this is the RFL and the rules change from week to week and club to club. In any other game I'd say they'd be put out of the comp as it's a clear black & white ( geddit? ) breach of the rules but we shall see.

A double edged sword,this.
Hull F.C. will guarantee a much higher financial return,Widnes should guarantee a semi-final spot(no disrespect).
However,Widnes do look to have a very strong case for Hull's expulsion.
With arlier postings about a dodgy draw, though,it's anybody's guess what will happen.
Anyone want to start a betting book?

This is great. First this and now the broo ha ha about the RFl and BBC insisting the draw was live despite the result being posted on message boards earlier in the day.

On another Board a poster has claimed that someone at the RFL called Nick Boothroyd at the RFl has claimed by email that it was live and the person who posted the draw on TotalRL.com at 12.30 had just made a lucky guess. Including getting the teams in the right order both home and away.

That is a lucky guess as.

I wonder if he can tell me the 15.30 at Haydock Park?

Very true. But Widnes is a better chance of the semi final - even bigger rewards.

strange how widnes didnt think to raise issue until after they'd lost?. As they had been so careful checking their own players eligibility I'm sure they were aware of issue with thackeray. RFL can't kick Hull out and re-instate Widnes as rochdale were also affected. Only thing RFL could do is throw hull out and give us a bye but as we've already been announced as TV match I'm certain they'll just fine Hull. Combined with Fact that draw results were sent round by txt at dinnertime yesterday, it's been an embarrassing couple of days for RFL.

Leeds should concede home advantage if that's the case. The same should have happened with Wigan this week.

Whitehaven would have lost anyway but to force part timers to travel down from Cumbria after a Monday at work is totally unfair. It probably lead to the large score line. All because Wigan can't gaurantee their pitch.

I'm afraid that's tough in my book. They are quite happy to enjoy the financial rewards of sharing a ground so it should work the other way.

Hey I've been out and only just heard of this. What a shambles. Can't see how they will chuck Hull out or Rochdale would then have an axe to grind. Best way IMO would be to let Rochdale and Widnes play to see who qualifies to play Bulls, but we all know what will happen. The RFL have no backbone when it comes to tough decisions.( unless it's Terry Newton then it's easy)

As for all this draw hoo haa, i dont recall the drive actually being announced as being a "Live Draw". It wasnt advertised as being on the radio or on TV and when they announced it on Look North, they did say "the draw took place earlier today". Maybe its just the Hull fans feeling aggrieved as having to play us instead of Oldham LOL !
