Football ground deal is opposed

A football pitch might be sold to make way for a housing development, to the anger of some residents.

Eccleshill United Football Club wants to use money from any sale of the land in Kingsway, Wrose, to renovate its ground.

The club has submitted an application to Bradford Council and is awaiting a decision on whether part of the site could be used for housing.

However, some residents are worried that any such development would harm the area.

Football club secretary Paul Jarvis said: "We'd just be selling the small pitch at the top. We'd only be losing a small piece of land and in the long run everybody would benefit from the move."

Mr Jarvis said that the training ground at the club was dilapidated and money was needed to restore it.

He said: "We need to push things forward."

But Kingsway resident Kathleen Wilson said: "The area is supposed to be recreation ground. We're all objecting to this, we don't want lorries going round and a load of new houses."

A public meeting will be held at 7.30pm tonight at Eccleshill United Clubhouse in Kingsway, where residents are invited to voice their opinions about the proposal.

Similar situation to Farsley Celtic where Leeds Council refused them planning permission to build residential prpoerties on a cricket pitch.

There must be a massive appraisal given to Eccleshill United in allowing local residents the opportunity to foreward there opinions to the proposed developments. This gives the residents the opportunity to take part in any further issues involving the planning. This does not normally happen!!
Maybe an old persons complex should be built on the land which would please 90% of Wrose residents.... Now there is an idea,,,,,,,

One of the main reasons that this ground is for sale is because there is land at Westfield Lane/All Alone Road with a site reference of BN/UR5.3 that is open for development of houses, the only thing that is slowing up the developers is the fact that they have to have an "access via third party land". Once they have the access via the football ground to Kingsway there will be about 400 houses not 63 to 75 as Eccleshill united football Club are saying. This is big money for someone and nothing to do with sport.

I admit to not seeing the finer detail but several things spring to mind:

1 - this is not enhancing local sports facilities as its gettiing rid of one
2 - what part the council here? Have they a strategy on grassroots sport or happy to pick up additional rates monies?
3 - I've heard various figures banded around re the sale price from £2-3m. So what expertise does the committee @ EUFC have in managing a budget of this level? Who are they? What state are the club's finances in at present? Who is sitting silently behind this waiting for a slice of the cake? I suspect the usual crowd of developers etc
You see it is all about money with sport used as a limp excuse.
If EUFC cannot manage its facilities without cashing in on their assets then I would suggest they are far from capable of making this work at all.
Finally, wake up Bradford Council...Kingsway has been turned into a rat run by several recent developments. You are blighting the residents lives and this shambolic scheme will only add to this. Take some responsibility.

Its hard enough finding open spaces for young people to play football and other sports let alone developing just for profit. My club struggles to find good grounds and training areas and serves over 80 people aged 13 to adult and have to pay high rents to the council yet were taking young people off the streets its all about money and profit isnt it. not about developing young talent. that why grassroots football is a joke in the uk and thats why we are unable to put out a winning international side. money money money

I have heard that they cannot build on Clayton field because there are some mines underneath it.

Have you seen Clayton Middle School now Chris, they were going to convert the school into flats but they places is now derelict.

It starts with a small bit of land and before you know it they be no football field left it be like lego land. We need to keep all green spaces now not sell them to build on. The BNP have be saying no to building on green belt land for many years now i know this land is not green belt but it should not go ahead if it does before we know it all the fields will be gone and once they built on there no turning back at the thing.
I heard there thinking off selling the clayton field off now the school shut down. It all about the money these days not thinking about anyone else thanks chris
