A judge has urged Bradford people to stand up against criminal Mr Bigs as the city becomes "riddled" with drugs.

Judge Alistair McCallum told two heroin and crack cocaine street dealers they could help lock up the major players for 25 years.

Iftekar Sadiq and Azad Aslam refused to disclose any names after they were caught selling wraps of heroin and crack cocaine in Reevy Road West, Buttershaw.

Sadiq was jailed for four years and Aslam, the father of two young children, for three years.

Judge McCallum urged everyone in the Bradford area to stand up against drug dealers getting rich by "selling poison to young people in our community".

"Bradford is being reduced to a city just riddled with drugs. It has the most appalling record for drugs," he said.

Sadiq, 21, of Luke Road, Canter-bury, Bradford, and Aslam, 39, of Scholemoor Avenue, Scholemoor, Bradford, pleaded guilty to possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply, supplying the drugs and possessing criminal property.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Aslam was dealing because he was out of work and Sadiq was forced to peddle the drugs to pay off a debt to his dealers.

Prosecutor Gavin Howie said the pair were caught selling wraps of the drugs hidden in a chocolate egg.

Officers in Bradford Area Drugs Team swooped on July 26 last year. They blocked in Aslam's car, smashed a window and seized the keys. Sadiq had £270 cash in his pocket and £1,250 was found at Aslam's home.

Aslam told police he had been "doing drops" in Little Horton and Canterbury for a month.

Sadiq, who was a drug addict, was paying off a debt to dealers.

Sadiq was remanded in custody after failing to appear at an earlier hearing. He was locked up for two years in January 2006 for very similar drugs offences.

Aslam's barrister, Michael Greenhalgh, said he was out of work at the time and paid to drive round doing street deals. But Judge McCallum said Aslam was trading on other people's misery to try to get rich.

The judge said Aslam "was sensible enough not to take any of the poison himself".

Nawaz Hussain, for Sadiq, said he was in "substantial debt" to a dealer. "He wanted to come clean but he faced the real threat of the kind of retribution that can be meted out by those higher up the food chain," Mr Hussain said.

After the case, Sergeant Chris Day, of the Bradford District Drugs Team, said: "We welcome the sentences.

"We work day-in, day-out, on the streets of the Bradford district. You might not see us, as we often work undercover, but we are there and are determined to tackle the problem of drugs. Calls from the public to our Dob in a Dealer line are invaluable and I would urge anyone who has any information or suspicions about drug dealing to contact us anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555111.

"From April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, we took 1214 calls from members of the public to the Dob in a Dealer line. The team made 441 arrests for drug offences, carried out 354 operations, just short of one a day for the year, and we seized nearly £2 million worth of Class A drugs."

Good to see at least 2 of these scum of the streets. The pity is that it is only the tip of the iceberg.

Perhaps this Judge should try ringing the police and reporting drug dealers.

It took a friend 5 years to get rid of the drug dealers which were supplying from outside his house.

The sentnces imposed are too short to be a real deterrent.....they will be out in 2 years and 18 months respectively, and when you weigh up the massiveprofits to be made selling drugs, most dealers see this as a risk worth taking......

Early release should not be allowed for drug dealers and they should be made to serve the actual term imposed...also hit them in the pocket and confiscate their ill gotten gains eg cars/houses etc.....that will really hurt people whose idol in life is money....

Drugs such as heroin and cocaine are a big problem in Bradford, as is another dangerous drug; alcohol. But no-one is looking at the reasons why so many people use them in the first place. Why are so many people so disaffected with their lives, and with the Society we have co-created, that they will go to such extremes of escapism? Society itself is sick and needs healing.

I remember when i was younger, the one reason people didnt sell drugs was because if u got caught, you had to spend some years in prison! One lad sold 1 wrap to an officer and did 5 years in prison, now thats a detterent!!!

If u can make over £20grand a week and expect a sentence of 2 years, some would say its a risk worth taking!

Also, how are we ever going to catch the "MR BIGS" , when they all have usual idiots to do their dirty work!

Drugs in bradford and Keighley are so bad, i dont see them ever getting control over the problem. Each dealer is replaced by another. . . .

ALL thanx to our new government!

i believe the Police are serious in cracking down upon the drug dealers. However the real reason for doing that is mainly for their own gain. Under the Proceeds of Crime Act they get to keep what ever they recover from the dealers. So its good business sense. They have a dedicated team of about half a dozen detectives just working on how to get money out of the dealers. I should add i am not against the idea, but believe the money should be given to charities in order that in the words of the criminals greater criminals are not benefitting from the proceeds of crime and also that the police are not fully focused on this area alone of what they see as policing.

To get drugs of the streets in any major city would require a large dedicated number of police officers a commidity they haven't got.The ones they do have spare are out using hand held laser pistols to catch real criminals doing 5mph over the speed limit while 200 yards up the road the unlicenced motorbike riders and the drug delivery men go about their business without any problems.

Its a fantastic place this country, i see dealers all over. Outside Bradford College, on the streets where we live. They have a **** sure attitude that they are untouchable, police do seem reluctant to get involved and would rather pull innocents up for dropping litter like apple cores and Quavers. This is the right foot forward and about time these people were made an example of. My only worry is the state of the prison population today these guys won't do no where near what they should, no one will employ them so of we go again dealing. Not meaning to sound negative but we really do need to support these drugs teams and we all have to start picking up the phones and dobbing them in, i have on a few occasions and will continue.

That is spot on. Anytime the police have to confront anybody they don't like doing it, they would rather take the easy way out and leave them to it. Instead they go punishing the law abiding public who cough up without any arguements.

Sadly, it is time to seriously have a debate re legalisation of class A drugs, and issue them on prescription to the addicts...

I know this is a defeatist attitude, but the drug war will never be won whilst there are HUGE profits available to criminals.....the vast majorty of crime happens to feed drug habits.....burglries
, robberies etc etc///...

If the drugs were issued on prescription, it would knock the muti billion organised crime industry for six, and children would not be runied by admiring these criminals who basque in their ill gotten gains...

Until the debate gains some legitimacy, the dealers will contnue their cancerous trade, and continue to destroy lives and communities...
