Passengers cut free from wreckage of cars

A 20-year-old man was seriously injured after a two-car collision in Dalton Lane, Keighley.

Firefighters spent an hour cutting passengers free from the wreckage of a Land Rover Freelander and a Toyota Yaris, which collided at around 9pm on Thursday.

Dalton Lane was closed to traffic while police, ambulance and fire crews from Keighley and Bingley attended to the six people involved. The Yaris, which was travelling towards Thwaites village, and the Freelander - which was heading in the opposite direction - were involved in a collision 100 metres west of the junction with Wenning Street.

Steve Spencer, watch manager with Keighley Fire Service, said: "We had to cut the roof off the Land Rover to get a woman out of the car, and we used hydraulic rescue gear to move bits of the car around to release the occupants in the Yaris.

"The four occupants in the Yaris could be described as young and the two occupants in the Land Rover were middle-aged."

A police spokesman confirmed the hospitalised 20-year-old man was a passenger in the Yaris.

He said: "He received serious injuries and was taken to Airedale Hospital before being transferred to Leeds General Infirmary."

His condition was described as serious but stable. The extent of any injuries to others involved was unknown.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact PC2207 Hirst at Keighley Road Traffic Police on (01535) 617059.
