City player of the year award
|
| Nathan Doyle shows off the T&A/Bradford & Bingley player of the year trophy at last year's awards ceremony |
It is that time again for City fans to vote for their player of the year.
Stuart McCall's first season in charge at Valley Parade has not produced the instant success that supporters had hoped for.
But there have still been some good individual performances and the race to
succeed Nathan Doyle as the T&A/Bradford & Bingley player of the year looks wide open.
David Wetherall has again been ultra-consistent in his final season in the dressing room before taking over first-team coaching duties.
And what about Peter Thorne, who is the club's top-scorer with 12 having missed much of the start of the campaign through injury?
Winger Joe Colbeck has come on leaps and bounds since being loaned out to Darlington and has now established himself in the side.
Others like Matt Clarke, Scott Loach, Kyle Nix, Paul Heckingbottom and Darren Williams have all played their part and will be in contention.
As with last year's winner, supporters can vote for loan players who are currently at the club. The only criteria is that they have played a minimum of eight games.
The prize will be handed out at the club's player of the year awards ceremony in the McCall Suite at Valley Parade on Tuesday, April 22. The evening will include a three-course meal from 7pm and Stuart McCall and the players will be there.
Bookings can be made from the club's sales and marketing department on 01274-706840.
All votes will be placed in a draw and the sender of the winning entry will receive two free tickets to the event.
You can vote by using the coupon in tomorrow's T&A or by text to 88442.
Texts should begin with the word "bradc" followed by a space and then the player's squad number, eg "bradc 3" if you are voting for Paul Heckingbottom. Texts cost 50p.
The closing date is Friday, April 18 at midday.
Employees of Bradford & District Newspapers, Bradford & Bingley and Bradford City and their families are not eligible to vote.
The eligible candidates are:
1 Donovan Ricketts; 2 Darren Williams; 3 Paul Heckingbottom; 4 Paul Evans; 5 David Wetherall; 6 Mark Bower; 7 Omar Daley; 8 Eddie Johnson; 9 Barry Conlon; 10 Peter Thorne; 11 Alex Rhodes; 12 Matt Clarke; 15 Joe Colbeck; 18 Tom Penford; 20 Scott Phelan; 22 Kyle Nix; 23 Willy Topp; 32 Lee Bullock; 33 Ben Starosta; 34 Scott Loach.

In my opinion it's a difficult decision noone has stood out that much consistently for the majority of the season. Only Wetherall has played an almost full quota of games and to a decent standard and although it would be fitting for him to win it in his final year he did have a rather shaky start.
Nix has done well but been in and out of the side. Our two best players have been plagued by injury otherwise I believe it would be a two horse race and possibly still is. Thorne and Clarke, have when fit been our two stars. And Seems Doyle left us in January last year a full season doesn't seem neccessary to win the award. So I think it will be between these two with Clarke claiming it.

No doubt this article will attract a plethora of witty comments! The only 2 who have played the full season (Weatherall & Heckingbottom) haven't exactly set the division alight. Thorne would have been well in the picture but missed too much through injury. Nix might have been the man but to me has gone off the boil since early January. Colbeck seems to be improving game on game and maybe come mid April he might just pip the 2 stalwarts? Otherwise it will be Wethers.

got to be Weathers, had a few off games this season but still our most consistent player. Colbeck and Thorne both showing good end of season form but Weathers has been putting in good performances for the majority, just hope both Thorne and Colbeck continue to play well and are still doing so come the start of next season.

It really is a tough one, there are only a few I would even consider to be totally fair and not give it to the first name that sprang to mind. Loach, Colbeck, Clarke, Thorne and I know this is a bit controversial I would also include Conlon's name in there if only to exclude him while narrowing the names down even more. I have been a big fan of Daley, but I don't think he has been better than some of the aforementioned or deserves it more.
Colbeck for me has improved 1000% this season. That loan spell to the Quakers has done him wonders.
Loach has consistently been solid while he has played for us.
Thorne may not run his socks off, BUT he does know his onions and knows where to be and has got us some valuable points this season.
Clarke when he has played has always given 100% and we look more solid with him in the back 4. But to be honest I don't think I could give it to him over a couple I have mentioned here.
Conlon, now the only thing that is missing are GOALS. ok, a striker is judged on goals, but look at what he does, he runs and runs and runs. Wins tackles, even back in defence, you see him all over the pitch. He wins everything in the air, never shys from the dirty work and more often than not gives everything to the cause. But alas his rating is on goals or lack of them which is why many would like to see him go.
If I had to choose quickly, ie not sit down and give it a really good thought, I think it would have to be Colbeck. He has really been the dark horse this season, he gives it his all, his confidence is high and giving him this award would only encourage him to continue it more into next season.
COLBECK for me.
A true City fan that truly deserves it. He is City through and through.

Luke - really unfair. I thought Daley was instrumental in City putting a battling 'team' display together at the weekend.
Re: Colbeck, he was outstanding on Saturday but he needs to be playing with that level of commitment for many weeks before he can be considered for a season long prize.
A few weeks ago, I thought it was between Clarke and Nix. Nix probably hasn't done it often enough though and Clarke is now missing more games through injury. It's a tough call but if you are voting over the whole season, then Wethers is looking like the only candidate.

Just remembered Billy Topp. I am just thinking there, very very surprised he has not even got one mention. His scoring his even worse than Bazza's but he does bring back fond memories of Carbone though. I don't think I could really give it to him over Colbeck or a couple of the others though.

Tough one this, very tough. A few names you can rule out due to an apparent lack of effort. I've thought about this hard and for a number of reasons:
a) the attitude and improvement he's shown this season
b) his talent and pace
c) his end product, including his finishing
d) the sheer number of yards he covers, tackling back, covering in defence, etc
It has to be Joe Colbeck for me, he's the one player that ticks the most boxes.
A close second is Peter Thorne whose goals are priceless but Joe's got my vote.

Can only be colbeck or thorne for me! Wouldn't give it to a loan player (especially when they'ne only played half a season i.e. Loach) no matter how good they have been.

This site really is a bit of a joke, and I have just get fed up of it. This place is like a playground for a bunch of inbreds, there are only a handful of genuine people on here making serious comments
Stan, Waynus/J0539H, Bantam Forever, Albion, Geordie Bantam, Utters, Andy, Luke, Maccy whom posted his first one today plus a couple of others.
I really have come to the conclusion the T&A are not bothered about the goings on here and it wouldn't surprise me if there are certain individuals in their ranks that make abusive posts on here, why else are there so many and users not getting deleted?
Like the old saying goes, "As in Rome"...
I can't really blame a lot of people leaving this immature website and going to other blogs which I am now doing. I have had no problems making postings on national media sites like SKY for example. I will just look for blogs that are better respected by not only the people that use it, but the people that run it. Moderaters on here, now they are an utter joke. Because of them and some of the news (which I may also point out gets allocated into the wrong section very often, how often do we see a Bradford City thread on the Bulls side of things or lost somewhere in the News section. Totally lost all respect for the T&A now, which I will never buy again.
So, onwards, never to return to this sorry site, off into the yonder to look to chat with adults about Bradford City and sporting issues. Not having to read through the crap of someone making one sensible comment only for that person to get a load of abuse. It really is the Huddersfield Clown fans and Bellenders from Bellend Rd that spoil this site, they have done for god knows how long. I have been posting for over a year and it really hasn't changed.
The T&A are a fool to themselves, they invite the abuse, they actually are promoting it by doing absolute Jack about it for how long?
I came on here innocently, made a few positive comments about City only to get a load of abuse, from then, James and I think Dave started then, but went onto someone else. Racist comments, by the way Farsley Deano, I am white before you ask me why I live in the Promised land again (idiot) or should that be skippy? Ali for 2 reasons, 1 after Mohammad Ali, and 2, to try and promote an Islamic name to try and get more of the Bradford people to contribute to comments on here as they are the make up of Bradford.
Bradford City will not succeed while it is still located in central Bradford, not until the "Bradford" people themselves support the club.
So that is it now Guys and Gals. I'll leave you all to Shaun and some of the others as the incompetent staff at the T&A are not really interested in making this a credible site. I stuck for myself in the past on here, lately I have just got too tired these past couple of months to even answer back as getting laid or going out for a drink is a much better option than waste time on here.
Hasta La Vista......
You watch, just see how long it takes the fools to delete this post as it does point out in cold reality what this site has been like, even well before I made my first post.
Never to return.

My 'player' of the season has to be Shaun. Great performer, always putting City first and trying to stay positive. His performances at the weekends are superb and we are very lucky to have his 'loyalty' to our club. On a serious note, I will choose Nix or Thorne. Wethers has made too many errors (and still cannot keep his hands off defenders).

Best player this season by a mile is Peter Thorne , now his fitness levels are back no doubt he will end the season with 20 goals , Wetherall has been very good , but the vote I think will go to the goal scorer.
Other players like Clarke and Colbeck and Loach have done well , but I think City should also have worst player of year , we would have seven or eight up for nomination that are not fit to weare the mighty claret and amber , we have some good players for next season but we need to get rid of a lot of dead wood , start with Williams , Paul Evans , Ricketts , consider moving Eddie Johnson back into attack because he is no midfielder player , however maybe release him too because im sure he's on a fair few quid and get someone a bit different in that adds something extra to the team.

It's a tough one this as few players have really stood out from the crowd - my top 3 in terms of effort and performance level would be:
1. Daley
2.Colbeck
3. Conlon
Daley has turned so many games this time around - Yes he does have a tendancy to flit in and out of games but when he's not on the pitch we certainly notice - The long and short is that we don't have another player in the squad that can change a game quickly like Omar.
Colbeck has improved beyond recognition this term. For me he was always going to be a star since his introduction at the start of last season, but as usual, the Valley Parade 'faithful' started getting on his back after a couple of bad performances which destroyed (as it would any young lad)Joe's confidence. Stuart has got a lot of things wrong this season, but one of his best decisions, which will probably go largely unnoticed by many, was loaning Joe to Darlo - the move obviously did his confidence a great deal of good and he came back a transformed player following his re-introduction to the side. He has been superb in recent weeks.
Barry I just can't fault for his effort in the face of adversity (mainly Valley Parade's ill-informed public) Yeah he's not the greatest scorer in the world, but from the crumbs he's been left with on the playing side; Lack of first team opportunities, wrong playing partners, playing on his own up front away from home etc. His enthusiasm and commitment has been superb. He is a far better footballler then most give him credit for - His paasing range is superb, his awareness great, and his ball winning ability second to none. Fair enough he probably doesn't deserve the award but he deserves some recognition for his efforts this season.
Thorney deserves a shout too for his goalscoring this term - My only criticism prior to the last few games has been his lack of effort outside the box - Thsi has changed for me over the last few games though. Thorney got very involved on Monday and that was good to see. He has more to offer then just goals.

I just know that Ali Baba is reading this and I just wanted to let him know that I concur wholly with those that will not miss his ludicrous, dogmatic and often factually incorrect posts - I don't care if he's a city fan or not.

At least the threads will be kept below 50 posts instead of the usual 100 full of Ali Baba drivvel. Good riddance.
As for best player this season, I think Nathan Doyle should retain it in some vague attempt to lure him back...
Clarke made the most noticeable difference this season for me. As for Omar "Dwain Chambers has more footy skills than I" Daly, I must have been watching a different team if anyone even vaguely suggests him for player of the year.
Thorne and Wethers are also in with a shout, but Clarke would be my choice.
Colbeck be a contender for most improved player however. A player that played with the level of confidence he showed should not be considered player of the year.

Who is noone? Has he got a squad number?

Only Wetherall has played an almost full quota of games and to a decent standard and although it would be fitting for him to win it in his final year he did have a rather shaky start. Nix has done well but been in and out of the side. Our two best players have been plagued by injury otherwise I believe it would be a two horse race and possibly still is. Thorne and Clarke, have when fit been our two stars. And Seems Doyle left us in January last year a full season doesn't seem neccessary to win the award. So I think it will be between these two with Clarke claiming it.
Who is noone? Has he got a squad number?
Used to be in Hermans Hermits.
Thats right, centre forward (very vocal).

Hey up beakless old lad, you are a big sentimentalist with the Conlon nomination. Still recall you had a soft spot for Cookie.
