Heritage listing blow to Odeon
 |
| The Odeon building which may now face demolition |
English Heritage has rejected the latest bid to grant listed status to Bradford's redundant Odeon cinema - a decision which is likely to spell its end.
The body, which seeks to protect the nation's most notable buildings, has decided once again that the former theatre and bingo hall, which opened in 1930, is not of sufficient architectural interest to warrant saving.
A report by inspectors to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) also states that the "serious extent of internal alteration" on the 77-year-old building has "further undermined" any future claims for listed status.
It is the sixth failed application to get the building listed in just over a decade.
A petition to Bradford Council for a Building Preservation Notice by campaigners trying to save the building and its distinctive towers had already been rejected because of the listed status application.
Yorkshire Forward, which bought the building for £2m in 2003, had previously given the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group a guarantee it would not undertake any further work on it while the DCMS made its decision.
And a planning application for the £55m New Victoria Place scheme - a mixed-use development of offices, apartments and a hotel - was also put on hold pending the decision.
Yorkshire Forward said it will now push ahead with developing the prominent city centre site which will mean the demolition of the former cinema.
But BORG member John Pennington said: "This is just another setback in the saga of the Odeon. I don't think English Heritage has been given the help and assistance it should have been.
"I am saddened we weren't given the six months' stay of execution we were asking Margaret Hodge at the DCMS for. There will be a way forward and that building is far from demolished yet."
BORG has come up with its own scheme for the Odeon building retaining the towers and including a hotel, concert venue, nightclub and cinema.
But Jan Anderson, executive director of environment at Yorkshire Forward, said: "The decision enables us to work in partnership with the Council, Bradford Centre Regeneration and others to progress delivery of the city centre masterplan.
"We appreciate the strength of feeling the Odeon has generated and we are fully committed to ensuring the Odeon site becomes part of a high quality city centre that current and future generations of Bradfordians can become equally passionate about."
Coun Andrew Mallinson, the Council's executive member for regeneration, said: "Hopefully this decision will bring an end to the debate about the worthiness of the Odeon building. We can now look forward to progressing the plans for the new development."
Maud Marshall, chief executive of BCR, said: "The proposed £55m New Victoria Place scheme will bring badly needed offices, shops, a hotel and jobs to the city centre, as well as significantly benefiting the wider regeneration of Bradford."

Read the last paragraph, "badly needed offices, shops, a hotel and jobs" the jobs yes, but then a re vamped Odeon would do that, the rest of course would either remain empty or be part of the usual shuffle of fill one premise and empty another, much as the Westfield development.

,jobs??
I agree with albion .. the odeon would have created jobs!.
As for this proposed new development .. we don't need any more offices, we don't need any more hotels and we certainly dont need any more shops!!

Sadly this whole saga has dragged on and on, thus people's affections and affiliations with the building have wained over the years and it has become a huge eye sore. If you were a visitor to Bradford and saw the state of this building, then walked into the "city" centre to go shopping, you would turn round and go home because there has been no care and attention brought into it - the council just see these sparkly new designs and become mesmorized ! Everybody involved in this project have dragged their feet on this for long enough. As for the new plans, do we really need more apartments ? There are already loads that are empty within the city centre - that's because its not desireable enough to live there - I hate to compare Leeds and BFD, BUT when you look at the investment there and the way they have created a Buzz about the City then you realise why people prefer to go there to shop and live.
We only need to look at the "fantastic" Broadway saga to show how inept the council is at getting things done !!

Sadly the Odeon is an eyesore, but put into the context of the City Centre it is no more of an eyesore than much of what has been thrown up over the past 20 or so years.
I also remember going to the Odeon in the 70's and I believe that it has the potential to be a superb concert venue which could attract top line acts.
Previous posters are right, we don't need another shop/office/hotel development, let's not forget that Westfield have added a Hotel to the Broadway site as they have failed to attract sufficient retail outlets. I understand that there is under occupancy for the existing Hotels so the addition of another one, or two, hotels will only lessen the existing occupancy rates.
The Odeon is a gem of a building and properly restored it is a building Bradford will be proud of. The Odeon has stood for over 70 years, will the Westfield development, or any of the other shoddy buildings which have no architectural merit in Bradford centre, stand for 70+ years?
Yorkshire Forward should be ashamed of their inertia, they fail time and time again to see past shiny presentations from developers who have no heart and certainly no attachment to Bradford.

It just shows that the building was loved only by a few for posterity, and has no architectural value.
Knock it down, leave a hole to fill with water and we will get our Lake, lets face it nothng is ever delivered in Bradford.
Thats why Ive left, packed my bags and gone. Had enough of this once great City being dragged down and down by bumbling incompetents.
Sorry, rant over.

A Women's Institute committee over a cup of tea could do a better job of sorting the city centre out than this council. The area is going down the toilet through either apathy, inexperience or personal interests on the part of the people who somehow have the responsibility for these decisions... maybe all three! Ignoring the fact that the Bradford Shopping Experience has been completely left behind by Leeds, look at what's happening even in places like Huddersfield.
Bradford does not need more money wasting consultancies, fancy artists impressions or half- ar*ed proposals for 'offices, shops and hotels' when a large vital area of the centre is wasteland.
Bradford needs positive leadership and action!

The plans by John Pennington and the rest of the borg team have been publicised at length in the yorkshire post. The images of the plan are exciting and will enhance the city far more than the regeneration team who are clueless and unimaginative. I ain't a member of Borg but common sense tells you which option is best for the site something those paid fat salaries for sadly lack!

It is only an eyesore now because it has been neglected. Deliberately one might say to be able to use this excuse. This is similar to the mass destruction of Bradford's beautiful buildings in the fifties and sixties when we ended up with the concrete blocks. I'm sure then the same excuses were rolled out to justify that destruction much as now in attempting to justify another. These buildings once they are gone, are gone forever... and Bradford takes another nosedive to architectural obscurity.

Just to follow on from the wise words from Pedestrian...
Look at the interior photo used in today's T&A. That is the area directly below the cut fall pipes. BORG have asked Yorkshire Forward and the Council to fix the problem for 18 months now when the first batch of undefcover snaps appeared, but a glimpse on PhotoBucket shows this has not been done.
Nonetheless, a negative image is used to justify the stance of BCR, the T&A editor and certain Councillors. It's just a pity they overlooked other internet site photos of areas (such as the three cinemas or Bingo) all still in good nick after 8 years of closure, despite the water damage confined to a small section of the interior!
PS
The story does not end here - regardless of what Marshall or Mallinson may be chirping on about today...

which ever is the quickest way of getting the area sorted out is my favorite - can we just get moving on with the city re-modeling with or without the odeon.

Look at the photo at the top of the page and in the background you see the architectural "triumphs" - sorry disasters -that were trumpeted as the saviours of Bradford decades ago. Why does something that is different always get knocked down in favour of an architects attempt to stamp his mark on the replacement modern monstrosity.
All those involved should be ashamed that they have allowed the deteriation in to this building and should look at the monstrosities behind it to see what the site will look like in 25 years time.

I have recently been into and photgraphed this cinema. Apart from the ticket booth area been damp(probably because of the cut pipes) the cinema is in a very good dry condition. Why on earth can they not save it? i am originally a Huddersfield lad and am proud of the work going on there.
Bradford will be a continual laughing stock if they dont seek to preserve classic architecture.

I must admit that the decision comes as no surprise, but then why should it since the council leads the board of the regeneration company and it has been clear that the current leadership has no interest in doing anything that is remotely risky, however passionately its voters feel about it.
Its like we're all living through a bizarre version of the Emperors New Clothes. Maud Marshall and her private contractor cronies will now front some anonymous concrete disaster as a 'masterpiece' and then leave us to inflict the same on the next lame duck council with no vision that employs her, leaving poor Bradford with another white elephant 'office block' for rent at a time when the global economy is tightening and companies are downsizing or encouraging staff to work from home.
There was a definite plan for a Concert venue in the original masterplan, but isn't it curious that no one from BCR mentions it when the future of the Odeon is raised? Irrespective of the architectural significance of the structure, at a time when sustainability is the hot buzzword, surely we should be looking at ways of reusing, recycling and reclaiming buildings rather than demolishing them ??
Our Councillors should hang their heads in shame for letting Bradford Centre Regeneration Company run a media propaganda campaign that ultimately aims to allow this fine historic building to be demolished.
They sold their vision as One Landscape Many Views, but given her refusal to enter into any meaningful dialogue with Bradford people, I think the honest BCR strapline should have been Our Landscape but Only Mauds Views !!

And isn't it interesting that on the day that Bradford's news is of the potential demolition of the Odeon, Leeds is carrying the story of how the City Varieties, one of the country's oldest surviving music hall theatres is to be returned to its Victorian heyday, at a cost of more than £9m. The leader of the city council there said: "The City Varieties is a music hall for which there is huge affection right across the city of Leeds.
"It is one of the last remaining music halls in the country and as such plays an important life in the heritage of the city."
Once again Leeds sets the example, such a shame Bradford's vision doesn't recognise the contribution of its heritage to its regeneration too

To the people of Bradford.
You have again been decieved, let down and lied to. The Master plan had been concieved, passed and will soon begin, with or without your consent, at the earliest opportunity. I believe there was "NEVER" going to be any intention by the bloodsucking braindead parasites that infest the council chambers of Bradford, to ever consider that the people of Bradford, (the electorate), might have an opinion of their own, and that as elected councillors, are subject to the will of the people, and not their own, however, you can still have the last laugh, vote the parasites out in may! God bless the people of Bradford, dont let the b******s grind you down.

Virtually straight after posting on 28days later i forwarded the link to my photographs to the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group for their use.
3. The telegraph and argus have done more wrong than i have as they have used one of my photographs [bold]without[/bold] permission. Yet another local paper shows itself to be of the standard of a third rate tabloid.
Come on Telegraph and Argus, get your facts right before reporting.

The proposed £55m New Victoria Place scheme will bring badly needed offices, shops, a hotel and jobs to the city centre, as well as significantly benefiting the wider regeneration of Bradford."
Rubbish.
who exactly is going to use these offices, shops and hotel?
The same people who do not want the Odeon knocked down?
Perhaps the same people who aren't buying office space or stopping in Bradford hotels?
So we knock the odeon down and fill it with offices for nobody, pound shops and cash converters and a travel lodge.
Fantastic. Well done. You bone heads are really earning your money.
Its Complete lack of vision and people who do not care about Bradford.
We need a decent sized concert venue. Not a hotel more shops.

New Victoria Place isn't in itself a bad development. However, it's not as if there is no other derelict land in Bradford they couldn't build it on. Why not let the Odeon stay (refurbish the existing building) and build New Victoria Place behind TJ Hughes (where the New Southgate development was "meant to go)? Or knock down Manningham Lane Retail Park - it's not as if its loss would be mourned by anyone.
I don't have an issue with New Victoria Place itself - but it's not worth losing the Odeon for.
