Thorne to begin contract talks
 |
| Peter Thorne heads the winner against Chesterfield yesterday |
City want to get top scorer Peter Thorne signed up for next season.
Thorne took his tally to 12 with the only goal at Valley Parade yesterday to dent Chesterfield's play-off hopes.
His one-year contract is up in the
summer and Stuart McCall is keen not to waste any time in nailing him down to Valley Parade for another term before other offers come in.
McCall said: "Hopefully we'll be in this week to tie up Thorney. There's no doubt in my mind that he'd have 20 goals by now if he'd been fit all season.
"He's a clever player and he's always there when the ball comes into the box. You know he'll get himself in the right positions."
Thorne's first-half header from Ben Starosta's cross earned City a four-point return for the holiday weekend - their best Easter haul for three years.
McCall admitted it was no classic but was pleased with the way his side dug in for only their second home win in six attempts. It was also City's first Valley Parade clean sheet since January.
"We've had games here when we've played a lot better and not got anything for it," said the Bantams chief. "But there are all different ways to win football games and we had to scrap it out at times.
"It was a really good goal; a flowing move, nice cross and good finish by Thorney and I thought we just about merited the victory. I'm delighted with four points out of six over Easter.
"I said not long ago that there wasn't much between us, Rotherham, Chesterfield and maybe Wycombe. We just had those eight games when we only took the two points which killed us."
McCall also hopes to appeal against Omar Daley's red card from Saturday - as long as he is not too late.
Daley, who is currently in Jamaica for tomorrow's international against Trinidad, was sent off by referee Mike Thorpe for allegedly kicking out at Rotherham defender Graham Coughlan.
But McCall reckons the winger was harshly done by.
He said: "In my eyes it's not a sending-off whatsoever and I'm not putting any blame at Omar Daley's door. I thought the ref did a decent job against Rotherham but he got that one wrong.
"I don't know if it's too late now because we've had another game but I only got the video yesterday morning and I didn't think there was anything wrong."

Hang on, is this the Telegraph and Argus website here. It has been very busy past couple of weeks, one story getting over 100 posts, now after 2 good results "surely" we would receive more lol.
This goes to show who the true CITY fans and supporters are, and not Huddersfield Clown fans from Gayfarm or Beeston UTD fans from Bellend Road infiltrating the site.
Well done again on yesterday's solid performance especially Starosta who set the tone of the game in the first half and the none stop Colbeck. Job well done.
Thorne, he came here for less money than he could have got elsewhere, lets keep his offer realistic, and if he wants to stop another season and give promotion a good realistic chance, then all the better. Thorne is a poacher of goals, just as Windass was, he will get in the right position and use his footballing brain to good effect.
He works well with Conlon, but something tells me if we are looking to keep Thorne, Conlon is out of the door as I am sure we need fresh competition for the starting XI up front and not just the midfield or back 4.
A good poacher in front of goal.
Lets get Clarke signed up quick and make him captain.

GOOD NEWS--I thought they would not even [bold]try[/bold] to afford him next season but the savings on Rickett's wages should allow a few quid extra for Thorne--good news indeed!
And two good results- very pleasing- so please SM now negotiate away the loan deals we have and negotiate the loan deals for our youngsters to come back--AND GIVE THEM THE CHANCE THEY NEED.

Magic idea, Ali, give Sick Note the captaincy and give him and the players a club mobile so he can encourage his team from the stand.

I am gob smacked that they started at 6.39 am today. Hell I was out for the count then!! Agree that Thorne is one of the few players who seems to be able to perform on a regular basis who could be here next year.
As for Clarke as captain, not sure where that has come from. He always seems to be injured to me. You need someone who can turn in 40+ appearances per season. He doesnt come across as Mr Motivator, hes cannot pass it out from defence, and he doesnt seem to have a great eye for the totality of the game rather than his own performance. Yes he is fast, good in the air, and keeps going, BUT we need more than that.

Where do these ideas come from?
He's missed more games than he's played since he's been here.
Who, in their right mind would make him captain?

Nothing to do with this report, but Mr Lawn's frustrations last week at the lack of season ticket sales. Question then, as Friday was a day where lots of people were off work and able to come down to VP and renew / sign up. [bold]Why was the ticket office closed?[/bold] When I went in the shop to enquire about a shirt for my 5 year old why was the response [bold]We sold out before Christmas![/bold] ? - That was 14 weeks ago and so far out of 1 trip you have now lost £200 in revenue (I pay by installments and shirts are £20)
If you aren't open, no one can do business. If you are out of stock in December, get a new supplier or kick their **** as it is costing you lost revenue.
Good result monday BTW - Nice confidence booster. Only 1 or 2 dodgy passes compared to Evans howler the week before!

[quote]quote[/quote] From quite a few people on here Big Mal and Mick. A couple of weeks ago when I along with some others went on about Clarke for Captain, not one person said no, do you think it was because he was playing well at the time and so was the team with his presence. Remember before his recent injury he was one of our most consistent solid players, I didn't hear many bad mouth him then.
Looks like now many are on the pendulum and looking to point their finger at something because there is not much else to whinge about at the moment, and with the 2 games in hand we are very close to the play offs, assuming we win them and I believe it is Rochdale that have 3 games in hand some how go on a poor run.
I didn't hear you guys go on about how useless he is or speak against the idea before he was injured and playing well, I wonder why......
As for your comment Jaffalaffa, he can't motivate the players. Look at how more solid we have been with him in the back 4, look at how rare his head drops. When he got that shocking own goal, every single player's head dropped, but Clarke was the only one that put up some type of fight and try to put it to bed. Clarke is more vocal than Wethers and he DOES have a more commanding presence than David, listen to him from the kop and then tell me how often do you hear David shouting at everyone, if someone went to Valley Parade for the first time and watched us with Wethers and Clarke in the back 4, more often than not they would guess Matt is the captain and not David. He may not be world class, but I reiterate once more, [bold]we are a 4th division club.[/bold]
I will repeat it again, Clarke for captain.
You contradict yourself here a bit Jaffalaffa, going on about not having Clarke because he "can't" play more than 40 games a season but yet go on about how great it would be to keep Thorne who also spent a bit on the sidelines this season and pre-season, and at his age if he does get injured, he will not get back to match fitness as quick.
The post really is as incosistent as a ref at VP lol.
[quote]But we need more than that.[/quote]
You mean someone like Rio Ferdinand or Ashley Cole. Woudln't we be better off setting our sites lower, ie a calibre to get us out of the 4th division, a division which we are in. We have got to come to terms of the quality of the footballers we will attract and the quality that can get us out. We are no longer a 3rd division football club let alone a 2nd division club. Clarke and Bullock are the types of players that we need to get us promoted. Then when promoted, we may not need them, time will tell.

Clear your eyes boys! One win and a draw, its that rollercoaster form we've seen all season. Guess Thorne has another good year left in him if he can stay injury free. Needs more than just Thorne to push the team forward a wholesale changes required including a new back four. All season we've been caught out at set pieces and the goal at Rotherham emphicises that. My view is a team should work from the back. Clarke as captain, you been smoking that dodgy stuff!!

AND.........
Who doesn't, he is not out of shape, he doesn't have a belly and his fitness when de does play seems no worse than any single player on the pitch, in the same squad or on the opposition.
This has been mentioned before, you can not tell me that even Premiership players do not go out on the p1ss and live it up a little.
I say let the guy let his hair down when he can, because when he does play he does give it his all most games especially compared to practically all of the squad. When he gets his fitness back and putting in solid performances there will be more echoing my opinion here about retaining him and a few more will second me about the captaincy. The only other person maybe for Captain is Bullock, def not Thorne as he will rarely play 90 mins week in week out. At least Clarke has been captain before but at Darlington.

Ali you haven't (or won't) engaged your brain before submitting your latest diatribe about captain sick note. I have not rubbished him or his performances. The point is a captain NEEDS TO BE ON THE PITCH & NOT IN THE STAND. This guy is regularly injured and until he has put together a run of at least half a season he should NOT be considered for captain.

I am 50-50 about whether Clarke should be made captain or not. Yes he is injury prone and I also think the responsibility of captain may take his mind off his own performance and he is prone to the odd mistake. However when fit he has been probably our best player this season, he is also an imposing figure and seem to be respected by the players. He would probably be my first choice at the minute but more because of the lack of choice.
However what has not been mentioned as of yet is the encouraging performance by Bower at the weekend. To say he is only just returning from injury he was sharp and looked solid. I don't know whether he is still considered vice captain or not but he would not be a bad choice if he could find the form of previous seasons, before he came in for a lot of what I think was harsh criticism from the fans.
Anyway on the Thorne news this is fantastic. I agree had he played the full quota of games this year he would be on 20 goals and touch wood he looks clear of his injuries (please tell me I haven't jinxed him!)

Im sorry but Bower has been awful this weekend, it was his fault at Rotherham for the goal,he looked slow and laboured. Yesterday, i cant remember once where he won a header!! I wish he was out of contract at the end of the season CTID

Mmmm Ali B. I agree that Clarke can be a useful player, but saying that he should be CAPTAIN seems a quantum jump. Sorry only in the main stand so I do not hear all those motivating comments that you pick up on. I guess I would prefer a midfield player to be CAPTAIN rather than a defender.
In respect of Thorne I think he is a talented player with a football brain. Yes he may be getting on, yes he may get injured, but I am not suggesting he should be the CAPTAIN. With strikers you tend to have a few options. Most managers do not want to change the defensive options mid match.
In the 17 games that Clarke has played, we have conceded 23 goals, which I guess is average for the season. So I do not think that we are watertight when Clarke is playing. I guess he is a decent player (when fit) at this level, but a CAPTAIN to get us into the next level, not enough evidence so far!!

Everytime he touched the ball it went to a chesterfield player, to think a few years ago a number of championship clubs were interested. We'd struggle to offload him in this division now. If it hadn't been for starosta who had his best game yesterday and the fact jack lester was injured, chesterfield would have had a field day with that defence. We need to get clarke signed up, get rid of bower his wages are too expensive for this division, and sign another two or three defnders.

Well done Mark Bower who has just returned from injury. Well done too to SM for his reasonable comments. He's the manager and fortunately for us he ignores the 'get rid' faction and their knee-jerk opinions. These people clearly have no managerial credentials.

Without reading the entirity of Ali Baba's comments I agree that City are a 4th Division team. I had the pleasure ... or misfortune ... of being somebody's guest at the match versus Chesterfield. How No 15 won 'Man of the Match' award is beyond me. He did nothing spectacular ... perhaps he ate his half time orange in one go, AND just who is that Subbuteo player that appeared as a substitute ?
Roll on to the end of the season ... City fans can queue up for their usual Seasons Video highlights .. 101 great throw ins.

Just because city had a clean sheet doesnt mean Bower had a good game. Its not a knee-jerk reaction at all,he has been poor the last few seasons-hence the relegations(and no im not blaming it all on him for city getting relegated)the fact he was in the centre of defence says alot. Is it me or do alot of fans feel they have to say Bower is good because of the sentimental value as he has been a city player for a while!!??

No doubt about it, he defintely deserves a new contract and glad it is getting sorted. Anyone who says no is insanely ludicrous. He has been brilliant for us and works hard. Shame he was not fit earlier he wold have added more to his impressive 16. So happy he is set to geta new contract, hopeped he would and as soon as I hope it happens. Come on Thorne. age is not the caseif you can play then you can play. also no point dwelling on his injury, if we did that then we wold never sign anyone. He is fully fit and no more prone than anyone else. So using that as an excuse is stupid. Thorne can get us 30 goals a season or more. Saying I thought they would not even try to afford him next season, is barmy course we were going to. Were debt free, and need time 1 season is not enough time at all. It is our 1st full season out of debt and with McCall. so wecannot expect all to be perfect at once. It takes time and with a busy summer to come and new contracts, I feel we will at last be up there in the top few. However this season has not been bad at all, midtable was expected. Those who stop going just as we have played poor somtimes are not true fans. Thankfully most will stay and support city no matter waht or waht league we are in. Most of us supporters are the best in football. Come On City. Hope we keep Conlon too he isa good player despite his lack of goals.

I agree with you here on this, Bower for me is nothing special, he is not a bad player either. BUT as one of the highest earners it does not really warrant having him in the squad, afterall would you pay for high performance engine oil to pour into a Nissan Micra to stick to 20mph? The answer is no.
I have not and will not slate Bower off, but from a financial point of view I am sorry to say value for money is ZERO.
From a mentality point of view, he has been a squad member that has gone through 3 relegations such as Wethers, yes I know he didn't actually play in the Premiership, he did play in the Intertoto Cup if I remember right and he WAS given a squad number that season so he was there amongst them all, hence going through 3 relegations, plus not to mention the relegation battles we have been in, I guess that is why Wethers keeps going on about safety when we are mid table and about a dozen points off going into the last 3rd of the season on a few occasions.
Bower has to go for me, more funds would be available for players wages and in turn we could replace him with 2 maybe 3 players for the same amount of money that can do the job as well as Mark can. I just can not make my mind up about Williams though, a solid enough player on his day, but can we do it with him?
In the close season we need someone to partner Clarke in the central defence and we need someone commanding in the middle of the park that can PASS a ball to his team mates to slot alongside Bullock. The wings are sorted, and we need cover for LB. Another RB wouldn't go amiss. Wonder if Simon Francis is available come the summer, he can cover quite a few positions in midfield and defence, struggled to get games at Southend, getting them in now though, not to mention he scored at the weekend also.
In a nutshell we need
A Goalkeeper plus cover, maybe a season long loan.
LB to challenge Heckingbottom, as these players are few and far between that are half decent, could always opt for a player than can play CD and LB too.
CD 2 at least to partner Clarke and provide competition as mentioned someone that can play LB also.
RB to challege Williams, but 2 if he is released.
MD Bullock keep, we need at least another 1 very strong player that can play in the midfield, Nix we need to keep.
The wings are looking very good at the moment, both flanks.

Bower is one of the higher earners in the squad but he is contracted beyond this season and will be one of our best centre halves so we may as well use him rather than him being just an expensive spectator. As for his poor form being the why we have got relegated I think it's more to do with the fact we've had noone but Windass put the ball in the net for years!
You must remember he is only jsut back from injury and hasn't featured in first team football for a while so he can't be expected to perform at his best but has put in solid performances all the same. He is a much better option to Moncur for me and this shows. Without Loach at Stockport they could of hit double figure. On Monday he pulled off three decent saves but wasn't under anywhere near as much pressure.

Ali Baba wants Clarke for the CAPTAINS role. Wether he stays or plays is not the issue in my mind, I just cannot see him as the CAPTAIN. Still cannot see why they were in negotiations at 6.39 am this morning. Insomniacs or are Barcelona after him!!

Could anyone tell me why the FULL match report on 'CITY V CHESTERFIELD' is left on the 'SPORT LATEST' Page, and not transfered to the main Bradford City Page?.
This inconvenience occurs for every FULL match report. Supporters post their 'Comments' on the FULL match reports, but they are lost on the Sport Latest Page.
If there is a Technical reason I am not aware of it, so please, could any of our Supporters enlighten me on this frustrating problem?
Many Thanks.

He has been a CAPTAIN before at this level, with Darlington. Yes he has been a bit injury prone of late, but was that the case he wasn't getting games in while we were a 3rd division club. BUT didn't David struggle with injuries in our 2nd season in the Premiership and the season after, AND the season after that, did YOU complain about him bieng CAPTAIN then?
Wethers struggled for [bold]THREE[/bold] seasons with injury and I did not hear one moan about why he was CAPTAIN. So to whinge about my opinion that I would like Clarke as captain is a bit lame really given your argument.
Clarke has a commanding presence, he knows the players and the club, the supporters and the management which IF we brought someone into VP and installed as a captain wouldn't. There is noone else in our squad I would choose over Clarke to be given the armband, not even Bower.
So lets see...
Has previous experience as a captain.
Injury prone, nothing exceptional to our current captain's spell a few seasons ago, if anything he is fitter. His current injury was in training and nothing to do with "fitness", it was his ankle if I remember right, can happend to anyone.
Commanding presence.
Very vocal.
Has respect from other team mates.
Leads by example, even more so than our current captain.
So can you really put a dampner on ALL these traits Jaffalaffa?
Tell us that Wethers should have never been our captain and tell us that he was (not now) a terrible captain just because he spent so much on the sidelines. Also, tell us all who you would have installed as captain, you may moan about my suggestion, all well and good, but you didn't really give a strong case in not having him as captain.

There was a [bold]FOURTH[/bold] season Wether struggled with injuries too, the 98/99 season with Leeds, so in your argument we shouldn't really have signed him to be a major part of the squad let alone as a captain.
Every single player goes through spells on the sidelines. Sometimes it is due to not looking after yourself, sometimes it is an injury that never fully recovers and is just agitated again in training or during games. Funny how quite a few injuries are sustained in training. Maybe you need to look at the training techniques within football as opposed to the player themselves.

Clarkey would make an excellent captain--after all is said and done and as far as we all know:he has not failed to take several drug tests, has not been banned for 8 months, been banned from driving several times nor done a self video of himself with some drunken friends and a girl or two or even thrown £20 notes around a club dance floor to get girls skirming at his feet. and he is not paid £100grand a week.
All in all, therefore, an excellent prospect to be captain.
Talking of video nasties: Paul Jewell seemed to like taking the odd video now and again in his past--was this his early experience of pro-zone--the tactical computer/video method of coaching players how to get into the right right positions that is.

In a nutshell we need A Goalkeeper plus cover, maybe a season long loan. The wings are looking very good at the moment, both flanks.[/quote] In one of Lawns interviews ? I missed that, what did he say ? [/quote] It was I think in January, maybe even February.
