Bradford College has revealed stunning plans for an iconic, £120 million campus set to revolutionise the look of the city's Learning Quarter.
Today, the Telegraph & Argus can exclusively reveal how the college may look if the proposals are given the green light.
Key design features include a Virtual Learning Environment, which will allow students to communicate with staff using wireless technology and learn under minimum supervision as well as a "Learning Mall" which will provide students studying vocational subjects such as catering, tourism and beauty with their own "real life" retail environment open to the public.
The campus will showcase green technologies and include a large, multi-storey indoor atrium, Mediterranean-style piazza and substantial landscaping. Michele Sutton, principal and chief executive, said: "It's a very exciting time for Bradford College, things are moving at quite a pace.
"Bradford College's new, iconic campus will add to the regeneration of the area. As always our mission is to provide the best education experience for our students. We are already one of the UK's leading colleges but we are determined to be the leading college. I am really proud of what we are doing in terms of skills regeneration and Bradford should be really proud of Bradford College."
A £96 million funding application is now in the hands of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). A decision is expected at the beginning of the summer. The college itself will provide around £24 million for the scheme.
An LSC spokesman said: "The LSC welcomes the proposal from Bradford College. However, it is in its early stages and nothing has been confirmed yet. The proposal will go through the formal approval process which normally takes several months."
The new campus forms the second phase of the college's accommodation strategy. Phase one, an £18 million eco-friendly campus built for construction and engineering students alongside a large sports centre on Easby Road, is set for completion by June.
David Brack, head of marketing, said the new build, scheduled to open in the autumn of 2011, would take the college "into the heart of the city".
"The way students are learning is changing with the advance of new technology," added Mr Brack.
"It is moving away from the stereotypical image of learning in classrooms to allowing students to make use of open spaces, lap-top learning and the internet."
Mr Brack said the college's fortunes ran alongside the city's. "There is a clear synergy between both the city and the college. We are hoping to build a world-class college which can only be of benefit to the future economic prosperity of the city."
The college's Westbrook and Randall Well buildings and Alexandra car park, off Great Horton Road, will be flattened to make way for the new buildings which will cover an area of 37,500 square metres. Demolition work is set to begin in March 2009 with building work itself scheduled to start the following August.
Andy Welsh, the college's executive director of corporate services, said: "With increased emphasis on the development of vocational skills and independent study, and with student learning having a greater focus than traditional teaching, the new build will provide a different mix of teaching and learning and support areas than the existing buildings.
"The Learning and Development Centre marks a significant change in the way the curriculum will be delivered. Technology-rich, it will allow learners and staff to collaborate utilising the Virtual Learning Environment.
The college's regeneration will form a significant part of the city's planned £750 million Learning Quarter, as reported in the T&A earlier this month.

Bradford College offers a wide range of courses to suit different abilities and interests. You can even do an MA there! (I've been tempted but they don't offer dumplingology - yet)

Can't say that MA (Bradford College) has quite the same ring as a proper MA. I mean MAs from former polys are bad enough but when jumped up remedial sixth form colleges start offering them you know they come with perforations.

Minimal supervision appears to be the driver of this development. All the top educational establishments have low staff to student ratios. Given the profile of students and courses, don't they really need more staff direction, not less.
Literally smoked glass and mirrors!

I believe their BA and MAs are validated by the University of Bradford who don't have the facilities to offer the same courses on their own campus.
David Hockney went to Bradford College, Andy Goldsworthy went to Bradford College..
but to do Women's Studies you have to go to the Uni ;-)

Women Studies is a big hard topic to get your head around. I can never understand the working of a women mind myself

I did get a "proper" degree from a "proper" uni - but that was back in the 80's. That was probably right decision at the time, but given the choice now I'd go to somewhere like Bradford College & learn a trade...

Many other Universities are also comprised of Colleges - King's College, Cambridge, for example.

Where is me hat? - Baht'at is that you?
Goalkeeper, if I'm right your assertion is absolutely correct. Might as well let them show them selves up. The real intellectuals are the ones that maintain a quite dignity about their achievements.
As for the college, I'd say this is a definate improvement on the current campus, or rather the 60's or 70's parts this proposal is getting rid of. However I would have thought the carpark space near the Love Apple would have been better used for new club/bar developments. The 'West End' really is dying on its arse. Really though, the Alexander Hotel on that site should never have been demolished, can't believe it went in 1993 only for the nightlife area to move there a few years later. Absolutely useless council.

Yet again a positive improvement to the Bradford area gets a negative response from the majority of the T&A readers, this is a project that should be supported and welcomed.
