Bulls embarrassed as Rhinos run riot
 |
| Skipper Paul Deacon can hardly bear to watch as the Bulls concede another try on the way to their biggest Super League defeat to arch-rivals Leeds |
Honest Steve McNamara did not look for excuses after seeing champions Leeds annihilate his Bulls side.
The red-hot Rhinos inflicted their biggest-ever Super League winning margin over arch-rivals Bradford, completely destroying them 44-2 in a ruthless destruction last night.
The embarrassed Bulls made far too many glaring errors and were easily over-run by the classy table-toppers, who go four points clear and remarkably have not conceded a single try in two games.
Boss McNamara admitted: "Leeds were very good and we were poor but I won't take anything away from Leeds.
"We were beaten in every department. They were more energised than us and we made a lot of tired tackles. They seemed to capitalise on every little error we made.
"We've got to wear this one on the chin and cop it but it hurts like hell.
"We're all very disappointed and it's certainly not a nice taste but the saving grace is that we only have to wait until Monday to rectify it."
Bradford, without six regulars, shipped eight tries as the world club champions controlled the game from start to finish at Headingley.
The visitors looked jaded, having played just four days earlier - Leeds beat Harlequins last Friday - but McNamara would not hide behind that for the catastrophic hiding.
"There are reasons for this loss but it would be wrong of me to use them as an excuse for the scoreline," he said.
"It happens. We've done this to sides and seen other sides come here and have it done to them. It's how we respond and rectify it that counts.
"There's no worry; within our dressing room there's a very good rugby league side. There's also half of a very good side that wasn't out there last night."
But none of the Bulls' crocked stars are likely to be back for the visit of Harlequins on Easter Monday - Paul Sykes has an "outside chance" - and they were hit by another casualty when back-rower Simon Finnigan (hip) limped off last night.

Last nights performance was an absolute shambles. I've said it since the start of the season, that Bulls squad are not fit. It shows in the current number of injuries and the amount of players puffing and blowing last night was a joke. Something needs to be done! I'm not a glory supporter and I don't care for Bulls losing to a good side as Leeds were very good defensively last night but at least they could lose and play well but they didn't even do that. It was a disgrace!!!! I was actually waiting for McNamara to do the broken record routine and say we made too many mistakes

The Bulls looked tired out from the start, but more importantly, some of the players just can't tackle effectively - snatching at an opponent's chest area instead of getting stuck in and tackling round the trunk & legs. We have some very average players who can't raise their game.

As has been said before - they lack fitness and some decent coaching and motivation.

Bulls being 'tired' half a dozen games into the season could indeed be a lack of fitness. I saw a Leeds side really motivated, backing up the man with the ball, great shape defensivly etc., Mclennon did this with the NZ international side. He and his coaching staff should be proud whilst I'm afraid Macca and his boys should take a long look at themselves. I was dismayed to see Hape playing right side. Had he been in his rightful pos. alongside Semi and Sol I believe the Bulls may have had a try or two. Why not keep the strong left side intact instead of playing a weakened left AND right side.??

Leeds may have stuffed us on and off the field.

What’s the problem? Expecting the Bulls to play a game with only 4 days might be it. The Bulls are not super human. I’d like to hear what an Australian side would say about turning round so soon. I bet all the Super league coaches will be moaning after the Easter period after so many games. The Bulls are a better team than last year, but it takes time will all the new players to deliver. The Leeds side has been the same side for the last 4 to 5 years. How good were Leeds back then ! They did nothing and won now’t. The Bulls will be in the shake up at the end of the season and nobody will like playing us. Let’s all be patient, but I suppose there would be nothing to write about!!

Were all down in the dumps about last night but you simply have to give the new lads time to gel.
I remember hearing all this when saints gave us an even worse hammering at home at couple of years back and we went and won the GF. Leeds mauled us at Odsal and everyone was saying that Ben Harris, Withers, Pratt, Radford, Meyers were garbage and we'd never win anything again. Noble was going to be sacked etc. Now all those same people are saying we were a much better squad then but the problems in the squad are not Maccas fault.
People need to keep their nerve. This is a good squad and some of the additions like Jeffires, Sykes and Finnegan are looking promising. Nero has been disappointing but give the bloke time.
As Guru says we'll be knocking on the door come the business end and those who've kept faith will be rubbing the doubters noses in it..............hope
fully.

The Bulls are better armed this season than last year, we've added speed. We will do very well later in the season. Everyone should make their judgements on how go were are when we get a full squad out and not half a side. I'm the first to be critical when its needed, but anyone with a bit of sense can see why we are not on top form yet.
Brian Smith said it all about MacNamara that he would a natural coach and do very well. I respect Smith’s comments as he knows what he is talking about, so lay off MacNarmara you doubters.

The biggest problem is that over the years players have come and gone, when they have gone we have not replaced them with the same quality.
Vainikolo is an exception because quite honestly, who do you replace a man that can score a try a game over a 5 year period, the thing is, you can't.
McNamara was a great player, but I was a bit skeptical when he was appointed as manager. He had big shoes to fill in the previous few that had managed the Bulls.
Looks like a 2nd season not holding a title of any sort from the 1st kick of the season to the last. Cant remember the last time that has happened for us. Last year was the first in almost a decade not to hold any title.

Fellas - Firstly Leeds defensively were outstanding last night hard as that is to say. They also took full advantage of almost all our basic errors. I suspect that we missed our injured players more than they missed theirs. I had fears that the "quantity not quality" recruiting policy might back-fire but it's still too early to say. Another point to consider - Leeds pre-season training has been geared to peaking for World Club Championship - there is no way on this earth that they can keep those levels up for the rest of the season - other clubs - Bulls included - have trained to peak later in the season. So keep the faith - McNamara is going nowhere - nor should he. It was an awful night but it's a long long old season!

Yep Brian Smith (famed for never winning anything as a coach) rates McNamara, maybe there is something in that eh?

I can agree with one point. Deacon as much as he's a gutsy player is easily read. His kicking game is poor, and when its good it's only average, and for a half back he has average pace. He has had the benefit of some excellent forwards around him or he would have been found out sooner

The choice is yours.

I am sure this wont go down well with some people on here but personally although the defeat was shocking I thought we werent as bad as we are been made out I just think Leeds were fantasic in every part of the game. Particually impressed with feather and semi.

Your calling for us to reinstate the bloke who signed the player you reckon is the worst half in the league for £1m thereby causing us to lose both Pryce and Peacock (2 players who've been excellent this weekend)
It's alright calling for a bloke's head but just now and again you could use joined up thinking.

It was very bad and very painful and there is no point pretending otherwise. I do think the 4 day turnaround from a very tough encounter with Wire, as opposed to their 6 day turnaround from a canter against Harlequins played a large part, but we still shouldn't have been that lamentable. The team that was out there wasn't that weak either. I, like all of you, can't say exactly why it was, but the players and Macca have to put their hands in the air and say that so far it isn't good enough, we don't look fit enough and we don't look to have enough stomach for the fight at times either and Deacon cannot give us performances like that in big games when we need something from him and expect to keep his job. I spoke to a Rhino fan this morning and he said he and the people around him were disappointed with the Bulls, they'd never seen a Bradford side so weak and disjointed and so easily discouraged. Macca can't pretend that's just down to injuries and lack of time for preparation. it's a long season and we can still be right in there at the end, but a lot of work needs to be done and now.

Be real to yourself Bri, we never looked like a mid table side with Noble in charge, you cant really so that we dont now.
Im calling for a bloke to be reinstated who is a first class coach, A who can motivate his team(usually) to win big and important games, a coach who demands the respect of players.
Can you imagine a Bulls side under Nobles control just plainly lying down and being run over at Headingley.
Macca should leave, or be sacked.

Whilst I think it's early to call for Maccas head I do honestly believe an established top coach could turn it around quickly even with the current squad But never Noble who is distinctly average.

I blame Noble for the mess we are in now - look at how many good, young quality players we had that he just got rid of - Pryce, Reardon, Bridge, Ferres the list goes on .... Brian Noble knew he was going long before the job at Wigan came up - he just went earlier than he anticipated. That is why McNamara turned down the job at Hull. I don't believe in sacking coaches but something has to be done - how about a good assistant coach AND a new conditioner - Martin Clawson doesn't look a picture of fitness - does he ?

Was anyone really surprised at last night's result, or the postion in the League?
they've gone steadily downhill after Noble's departure and the close seasuon signings were uninspiring.
There's plenty more night's ahead like last night!

The Bradford board are to blame for the mess we are in. The signing of useless Harris must go down as the biggest mistake in our proud history. Take about putting all your eggs in one basket. We were world class at the end of 2003 we had youth coming through the ranks , but if you decide to give all your income to a glory seeker who plays for himself then what do you expect. Harris will walk away to Celtic Crusaders a very rich man, and Bradford will be left with egg on their faces. Meanwhile all the talent that we nurtured will be successful wearing the colours of other clubs. Bradford til I Die , but for most of the lads who came through our Academy it was Bradford til Harris came along.

In an earlier thread someone asked who would we replace McNamara with. My answer would be Brian McDermott. His Harlequins side isnt full of stars and he has them playing for the badge with 100% commitment and they play some nice R.L too. Just think what the bloke could do with some decent talented players. All teams reflect their coach in the way they play and under the leadership of Brian McDermott you would get from the bulls team what we got from Brian when he pulled on a bulls shirt...100% commitment, desire, and a willingness to die for the cause. Under McNamara we will only ever get [bold]excuses[/bold] .

Then any new coach would not be another 'rookey' but an experienced Head coach with an impeccable record. Calm down everyone it won't happen. Macca is an experiment by the Bulls and it must be given time. Will it work?? Who knows but at the moment it doesn't look that clever.

Some Youths experiment with drugs. In the end most see sense and call it a day. On the other hand those that dont see sense continue with their experiment and end up in a right mess.

what sort of supporters call for the head of the coach so early into the season, some of you ought to be ashamed to call yourselves supporters! yes we were poor defensively but leeds are red hot at the moment, our turn will come! all the negative talk is not productive at all. we all want success but get real! we can't win every time. we had a few players looking tired, they'd had 2 days less to recover than leeds had. turning out a performance like we did on sunday is bound to take it out of them and 3/4 days isn't enough. [bold]true[/bold] supporters will get behind the lads for mondays game and stop the calls for heads!

well said cj, calling for the coach to be sacked is hysterical and silly and plays into all our opponents hands. Real supporters get behind the team, we were very bad on Thursday and the rhinos ran hot when they saw we were falling off the pace. It can happen, the issue is taking it on the chin and accepting that we have to do better, consistently. Good luck to Macca and Long Live The BULLS!!!

I'm a Rhinos fan and just a little fed up of the excuse we had 2 extra days rest. Bradford played at home so therefore could have arranged a Friday night game against Warrington instead of a Sunday it wasn't on Sky so its bad planning on the bulls part.

You must be fed up if you can't bring yourself yo watch your local team

The Bulls were definately unfit. It is time to get rid of all the other clubs cast offs, experience does not make fit players. Now there is o relegation, this season should be forgotten, and youth given it,s chance just as Leeds did a few years back. Except they kept their young players whereas Bulls shipped them on. Being used as a pension top up by expired players is not good enough. This was probably the worst display I've seen from the Bulls.

I think your arrival on this board is very telling 'Gaerts'... it says that you know it was a massive factor. Still, Thursday is gone, it can't be changed, upward and onward, they don't hand out the trophies in March and we can ome back from this.

For note I was born in Leeds and moved to Wakey 6 months ago and only missed 1 game this season. Yes but fault is it you choose to play on Sunday, we choose to play Friday. Can I suggest to the Bradford board the genius idea of not playing on Sunday before a Thursday game. Mind thats if yout not bankrupt by then.

Listen we had a bad game ,we all know that,Did Leeds have a good game against Cas?
We'll bounce back from this, why get despondent over one game, OK so we're used to better than this, but I'll bet you one thing we'll be back to haunt the Loiners and before this season is out.
I'll be there again on Monday as I expect all loyal Bulls fans will be.

Haitch, and if Quins do win, what do you want or expect to happen then, will you call for heads to roll?
And if so will it be Macca or the entire squad or both and back to 1963!!!
There ain't no quick fix to a bad spell.

Of course there will come a time when heads may have to roll.

See, as Gaert says, even the Rhinos acknowledge the result the other night was largely down to lack of time for proper match preparation. And gaert, we are in n o dange rof going bankrupt and that it is actually a definite plan to drag the ahrris saga out a slong as possible to screw the bulls financially is indicative of a despicable and frankly cowardly approach from the Rhinos.

So if the Bulls win on Monday the Quins can use the fact they are having not only a shorter turnaround, but have some travelling to do which is going to effectively mean the players are not getting anywhere near the same rest time as the Bulls. Swings and roundabouts isnt it?
However the major problem for both Leeds and the Bulls is that im sure when the fixtures came out, both coaches will have been thinking about resting players and changing the team around approaching the easter games, but due to injuries this hasn't been the case, but the Bulls do have an advantage on that they have a big squad with experienced superleague players, unlike leeds who brought in youngsters.
Just another point as well, back in 2002 Leeds got rid of a lot of average, underacheiving players, Sheridan, Hay, Pratt etc, brought the youngsters through like Mathers and MaGuire, Diskin, Bailey and they are still there, whereas the Bulls seem to have got rid of promising youngsters and brought in the average underacheiving superleague players, Feather, Evans, Jeffries, Tadulala, Sykes, ask yourself if any of these players would get into the Leeds or Saints teams and you have your answer.

However the only heads to roll initially are in the coaching. Head coach would be replaced and another would come in. Then it is likely other members of the team are replaced by the new coaches preferences...It won't happen as I doubt the Bulls could afford any other than another rookey coach at the moment. It is possible however that a more experienced head (Ellery Hanley??) could be brought in to oversee the current coachng team. Now there IS a talking point.!!
