Car shares now the way ahead!

| Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly on a bridge over the M62 after opening the £5.33m car-share lane |
A groundbreaking motorway car share lane - the first in Britain - has been opened for business by Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly.
The pioneering project is expected to save drivers up to eight minutes per journey - and fewer cars on the road will mean a reduction in carbon emissions.
The 1.7-mile lane, built by the Highways Agency, is open to cars and taxis with two or more occupants, buses and coaches.
It links the southbound M606 near Bradford to the eastbound M62 towards Leeds.
Commuters will be able to bypass congestion at J26 of the M62 and gain priority entry onto the eastbound M62 - a busy commuter route for motorists from Bradford to Leeds.
Currently 80 per cent of vehicles using the junction have only one occupant and Mrs Kelly hopes the new lane will encourage drivers to take a passenger.
She said: "By building the lane we can significantly reduce travellers' time on the road and give people a reason to take passengers.
"We will get more people travelling on the road without an increase in congestion and that is also good for the economy."
Around 500 miles of UK motorway have been identified as potential sites for traffic management measures, which could include more car-share lanes.
Mrs Kelly said: "If we get it right we'll see more people getting to work quickly and easily. It's a much greener way to travel."
A similar scheme proposed for a section of the M1 near Luton was scrapped after a feasibility report by the Department for Transport ruled that the lane would not be practical there, and found the rules would be virtually impossible to enforce.
Mrs Kelly said: "It makes really good sense here as it's an incredibly busy stretch of motorway - and it is much safer here. The engineering in other areas may mean it is impractical in those places but we need to make the best use of our existing motorways.
"And car-sharing works better on the inside lane for police enforcement - it is easier for them to see who is travelling in the car."
The £5.33 million project was funded by the Northern Way economic development partnership.
The organisation's project director John Jarvis said: "If we can encourage greater levels of car sharing it will help lock in the benefits of additional road capacity and be good for the economy and the environment."
Graham Riley, the Highways Agency regional member for influencing travel behaviour, said: "As drivers are sat on their own at Chain Bar roundabout they will see people who are sharing scooting by - it's a visual clue for them.
"And you have somebody to chat to on your way to work, it improves working relationships being in a less formal atmosphere."
Highways Agency project manager Andrew Brown said: "Evidence so far suggests predictions have been exceeded at a very early stage. We're confident it will run safely."

So you can save 30 seconds as you will run straight into the end of another queue.
Its a gimmick that wont work.

Time will tell, but as most motorway users are not in a position to take a passenger on a regular basis, i think it will make little difference.

it will make no difference it will still take you 25 mins to get down the 606 to get to the lane and when you do you will just join the back of the queue on the 62, no one needed it this morning as there wasnt a car on the 606 everybody had gone to the moon.

I think this will make a difference, you don't join the back of the queue on the M62 you cut round straight past the roundabout and then carry on the M62 in the car share lane, perhaps those being negative are the ones who travel alone... and have to go off the M606 at Junction 26, wait at the lights, and then queue to join the M62...

Someone should have given her a leg up and over the bridge.
It won't work, and I won't have anyone telling me where I can drive and who I should take with me, as long as I abide by the laws of the road I will travel how and where I like, if I can't use a motorway lane as I am a single traveller then what's the big wow? It's been pretty much that way for years on our roads, make bigger wider roads so we can drive bigger faster cars. The damage being done now will take effect roughly 150 million years time, by which time the next ice age will be in full effect and the planet will undergo another mass change has it has done many times over. Either that or that God fella will sort it out cos he's magic.

So its taken 18 months and £5,300,000 to widen an existing 1.7 mile stretch of road by one lane. Thats about £3,000,000 a mile, but it saves an average of 6 minutes commuting time (during rush hour traffic only). Ms Kelly suggests there are 500 miles of road that could be converted in similar fashion - good idea Ms K - so thats what,,,, £3,000,000 times 500, only £1.5 billion quid !! Wonder where thats gonna come from. Alternatively we could spend the money more wisely, on developping a method of putting wings on porkers.

Why do all these rubbish car share lanes have to be on the Bradford/Leeds route?

The idea of car sharing, in principle is good, saves time - horrah ! But, in reality, if I decide to share my car journey with someone else, I will no doubt have to travel to collect that person, so additional time / mileage on my behalf. So the 6 minutes I would save (one way only, the 2 passenger lane is only in one direction), will be lost in extra time / effort in collecting my potential passenger. I suspect that within 2 years this lane will be converted to a normal lane, to ease traffic after it has become evident that the 2 passenger scheme has not been adopted.

I'm not sure what everyone's obsession with using their car is. surely public transport would be a better way to spend the money? the roads are all blocked these days because everyone uses their car for journeys over 100 metres. That, incidentally is why everyone's so **** fat too! So, solve congesiton and obesity/health at the same time by making poeple use public transport - or god forbid, cycling to work.

I think it'll be like the A647 in Leeds. Been there 10 years - an obvious flop, but to the council an overwhelming success (but no other city in the country has followed their example)

I think it's a good idea. However, today, the day it opened, it was being used by cars with ONE PERSON in them! Where was the policing? The only way this can be effectively policed is with cameras, otherwise it will just be abused.

A major reason this junction is so busy on a morning is because of the car share lane was introduced some years ago on the more direct route from Bradford to Leeds, the A647. The M606 just got busier and busier after that...

I use the M606 on a daily basis.
All this does is allow traffic to miss the traffic lights at the slip road onto Chain bar roundabout.
From my research (driving on it every day) 99% of cars are single occupancy at rush hour.
So yet again, Something for the Minorities. The Minorities in this case being a car with more than one occupant. I was pleased to see NO Police presence on the road. Thats not really a very good use of police time anyway. "so officer where were you when the bus full of nuns were getting happy slapped?" "guarding a 2+ slip road"
Is it just me who doesn't understand how this crap comes about?
Car sharing is a waste of time. And would cause extra travel time and fuel consumption. Also, If you crashed your passenger could Sue you.
I actually looked at the car sharing site they were pimping.
Nobody near me goes anywhere near where i work or at the time i set off.
The site suggested i pick someone up from HALIFAX then go back through bradford to LEEDS
Park and ride would be a better idea. Bradford to Leeds via the white rose. Or they could get on with the original idea of widening the fking M62.
I want to tie the people involved to a chair and beat them with a baseball bat until the stupid falls out.

It's a pity that they didn't give the money to Metro to improve the public transport rather than remove buses like they have in this area!
What a complete load of c**p! As for Ruth Kelly, has she ever achieved anything? Dohh, no she hasn't, she wouldn't know a sensible idea if it bit her on the backside!

Gentleman Jim! I propose you drop the 'Gentleman' making comments like that! As a regular user of public transport I assure you that my modest form is permanently cloaked with a fragrant cloud of lavender. Or sometimes Lily-of-the-Valley, depending on my mood. And although I have occasionally been moved to make an irate response to comments posted herein, I have to say that the upholding of good etiquette and manners are of utmost importance to one as sensitive and gentle breeding such as myself.
Which is to say, if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for you Lazy People, asphyxiating the planet! We can't build our way out of congestion. The only long term solution is to have fewer vehicles on the road, which -yes!- means better, cheaper, more reliable public transport and road pricing for the selfish lazy fat people who won't get out of their metal boxes.
Apologies if I'm being rude to selfish lazy fat people. I am venting my spleen.

Trouble is people on buses often vent something else!

Plus, as 99% of commuters appear to smoke their heads off every morning, they don't want to go on a bus which is no smoking. I would start taxing people for being fat, but that's not got much to do with this car share lane really!
