A passenger jet has made an emergency landing at Leeds-Bradford airport after suffering suspected engine failure.

Around 100 people were on the Austrian Airlines plane which radioed ahead to the control tower at LBIA saying it had run into difficulties.

The airport was put on an emergency footing as the Fokker 100, which was heading for Leeds from Innsbruck, came in at just after 3pm. Around 12 fire engines were waiting in readiness for the aircraft.

An airport spokesman said that the aircraft landed safely, all the passengers were taken off and were uninjured.

Up to 12 fire engines were seen at the airport ready for the emergency landing.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The pilot indicated that he was going to be making an emergency landing at speed. "The aircraft had 103 people on board but thankfully the aircraft made a safe landing and no-one was injured."
