Fairground favourites like the carousel, big wheel and ghost train are on offer among more than 50 different styles of rides at Finnies Funfair in Peel Park, which runs from Friday to June 5, while the more adventurous will want to try the Mega Bounce, Matterhorn or Freak Out! ghost trains and fun houses. There will also be rides suitable for younger members of the family such as cups and saucers, trampolines and inflatable slides. And you’ll be able to take your pick from the giant cuddly toy stalls, too.

Brookfield, in Oxenhope, is an intimate one-acre garden which is open tomorrow to the public in aid of the National Garden Society. As well as a large pond with an island and ducks, there are many varieties of candelabra primulas and florindaes, azaleas and rhododendrons. Admission is £3, children go free, and the proceeds go to charity.

Ahoy mateys, be ye brave enough to earn your sea legs? Eureka! The National Children’s Museum at Halifax, invites you to join their crew during Pirates Ahoy, a week of swashbuckling adventure which starts next Saturday. Pirates Ahoy is free with standard admission, although there is an additional charge for the pirate training school.

Forget the Hollywood version of Iron Man – at the Royal Armouries this half-term there’ll be no special effects, just real iron men in full-on live combat. Falconry, horse shows, live combat, drama, hands-on history, guided tours, arts and crafts – there’s more than enough to keep the family entertained for the whole day. The Real Iron Men at the Royal Armouries Museum runs until June 6. Entry to the museum is free, however, some events and activities may carry a small charge.
