PLAYERS from the early years of Bradford City Football Club have been commemorated in a new book.

Terry Frost, 68, has compiled ‘Bradford City AFC Who’s Who - Part One, Football League Players 1903 to 1939’, the period from when the club was formed up until the start of the Second World War.

The book features profiles of 385 players who lined up for the Bantams in at least one league match during that initial period for the club.

This is the fourth book Mr Frost has produced on the club. They include ‘Bradford City: A Complete Record 1903-1988’ and ‘The 100 Greatest Players of Bradford City’, which he co-wrote with former Telegraph & Argus City reporter David Markham.

The club was founded in 1903 and immediately elected into the Football League Second Division.

Promotion to the top tier followed in 1908 and City won the FA Cup in 1911, where captain Jimmy Speirs scored as they beat Newcastle United 1-0 in the final which went to a replay at Old Trafford. This remains City’s only major trophy win.

Mr Frost, who attended his first City match in 1961, will soon start working on the second part of the book, featuring profiles of players between 1946 and 1980 and the third volume between 1980 and the present day.

Mr Frost, of Dene Hill, Baildon, who is a retired construction manager, said: “It took me 12 months to do the book. It features details of every single player who played for City during that time.

“It is a book on the first period for the club and will evoke a lot of memories for the supporters. It will answer a lot of fans’ queries about whether people played for the club or not.

“It was a progressive time for the club. They came from absolutely nowhere and not having a team. It will include the FA Cup-winning team of 1911.

“Jimmy Speirs is the biggest name for the club during the period featured in the book.”
