Previous Occupation - Owner of a family business, ran their retail convenience store in Swansea (1979-90).

Personal Overview - Has some Local Government and business experience, and won back the Ribble Valley seat at the 1992 General Election. He advanced to the position of PPS in the 1992-97 Parliament (notably to William Hague MP), and was made an Opposition Spokesman after the 1997 General Election, being further promoted in 2001, but losing out in the November 2003 reshuffle. Was made a Conservative Party Vice Chairman in November 2004 with responsibility for Conservatives Abroad and advancing the Conservative vote overseas. Became a Deputy Speaker in June 2010. Resigned from his post as Deputy Speaker in September 2013 after being charged with several offences and became an Independent.

Personal Overview - Effectively replaced former UKIP MEP John Whittaker at the 2009 European Elections who he had worked for as an assistant at the Parliament for several years. Has an academic background as a lecturer in the Merseyside area. Politically, he has achieved relatively rapid promotion within the party in recent years, becoming Party Chairman in 2008. In terms of European politics, he has gained experience through his work for John Whittaker MEP, he has also acted as a political consultant to Godfrey Bloom MEP and has been Editor of the Bulletin from Brussels Magazine.
