The King and I
Weary of dreary winter days? Then get yourself to St George's Hall this week to experience some Eastern colour and magic.
This Kevin Moore production of The King and I for Buttershaw St. Paul's AODS brings the magic of the Orient to chilly Bradford audiences.
Chris Nutall is an imperious yet charming King, struggling to adapt to Western ways. His English governess, Anna Leonowens, is sensitively portrayed by Claire Adams. Kristian Cleworth is in fine voice as Lun Tha whose doomed love affair with the beautiful Tuptim, Christa D'Apolita, brings events to a dramatic climax.
The show contains well known melodies such as Getting to Know You and Shall We Dance, and Helen Lever impresses with a beautiful rendition of Hello Young Lovers.
The society has reason to be very proud of its younger members, Aidan McAndrew, as a proud Prince Chulalongkorn, Ben Burke as a charming Louis and Katie-Mae Ramsey a delightful Princess Ying Yaowalak.
However, it is the Siamese children, the youngest only seven, who steal the audience's hearts. With superb dance routines and stunning costumes, this is not to be missed.
