Players steal march to win date with Calendar Girls!

Grassington Players are ready to perform the Calendar Girls in August Grassington Players are ready to perform the Calendar Girls in August

The cast of the world premiere amateur performance of Calendar Girls has been unveiled.

The play is being staged in Grassington, a stone’s throw from where the real-life members of the Rylstone and District WI launched their nude charity calendar, which went on to hit international headlines and raise more than £3million for Leukaemia Research.

The Grassington Players have been entertaining Dales audiences since 1923 and have close links with the real Calendar Girls. The original Miss January, Beryl Bamforth, is a long-term member of the society, and John Baker, whose battle with leukemia inspired his wife Angela and her friends to produce the calendar, was house manager and treasurer. Angela has performed with the company, along with fellow Calendar Girl Lynda Logan. The production opens in Grassington on Friday, August 31, a day before any other amateur group is granted license to perform the play.

As well as the bond they share with the real WI members, the Grassington cast are also reminded of fellow Players they have lost to cancer and two members currently suffering from the disease. Director Ed Williams says: “The play strikes a real chord with all the cast.”

Calendar Girls runs at the Devonshire Institute, Grassington, on August 31 and September 1, 6, 7 and 8. For tickets ring (01756) 752222.
