Director Robin Green’s production of The Crucible begins on Monday at Ilkley Playhouse.
Arthur Miller’s drama of paranoia, persecution and exploitation is among the greatest stage works to come out of 20th century America.
Based on actual events that took place among a small community of devout Puritan settlers in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, the play focuses on Abigail Williams, dismissed from the employ of local farmer John Proctor, after having an affair with him. She gets back at his wife Elizabeth by making false accusations of witchcraft.
Dealing with false witness, manifestations of mass hysteria and rumour-mongering, The Crucible remains a story for our times, for all times.
The cast will be taking the play to Cornwall’s Minack Theatre in August.
The Crucible is on at Ilkley Playhouse from Monday to July 18, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from (01943) 609539.
