Elkie’s still a big hit

She was born Elaine Bookbinder in Salford and she went on to enjoy a career spanning nearly five decades and 19 albums.

She is Elkie Brooks, who’s appearing at Leeds Grand Theatre next month.

Elkie cut her first single for Decca in 1964 and toured on bills featuring the Beatles and the Animals. In the early 1970s, she sang in a couple of rock-oriented bands, including Vinegar Joe, featuring a pre-fame Robert Palmer.

In 1975, Elkie began a solo career and her second album yielded the classic single Pearl’s A Singer, which made her a star. It was followed by Sunshine After The Rain, then Lilac Wine, Don’t Cry Out Loud and Fool If You Think It’s Over. In 1986, No More The Fool gave Elkie her biggest UK hit.

Elkie’s albums and tours encompass jazz standards, film classics and blues covers.

Elkie Brooks is at Leeds Grand Theatre on Sunday, July 5. For tickets ring 0844 8482706.
