KALA Sangam, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, shows off its new direction with a vibrant season of dance, music and theatre.

Bradford’s intercultural arts centre’s autumn programme is billed as its most diverse yet. Creative Producer Alex Croft said: “Our Autumn - Winter season has something for everyone. Our This Is Bradford strand looks to put us at the heart of arts delivery in the city, offering space and performance opportunities to local artists and companies. Our South Asia Now strand increases support for British artists of South Asian descent and for those keeping traditional artforms alive. Our British Diversity strand has seen us widen our programming, putting out stage at the forefront of what it means to live in Britain in 2018. It’s an exciting time for the company, there’s never been a better time to check us out!”

The season begins with Cultures Cross the Borders (September 6 to October 18), an exhibition exploring comparisons between Eastern and Western Culture by Syrian-born artist Ousama Lazkani. Kala Sangam’s second Artists Takeover Scratch Night (September 15) features artists such as Bradford poet Shareena Lee Satti and dancers Hiten Mistry, Parbati Chaudhury and Rachel Clarke. September finishes with a Music Double Bill (September 29) featuring Jazz North Northern Line artists Täpp and zerOclassikal’s latest work, ONE, by Mithila Sharma.

October events include Seeta Patel and Lina Limosani’s Not Today’s Yesterday, a powerful one-woman show blending techniques from Bharatanatyam, contemporary dance and theatre. A fast-growing underground gathering for the past four years, Tech Styles comes to Kala Sangam for the first time, showcasing “the best breakin’ the UK has to offer”. On October 26, Kala Sangam continues the company’s birthday celebrations with an open day featuring workshops and performances.

November starts with Shane Shambhu’s Confessions of a Cockney Temple Dancer, combining stand-up comedy and Indian dance. Women of the World Festival is a weekend of talks, discussions, music and activism, and Kamala Devam Company’s Ankusha and Other Mysteries features world-class dance, film and theatre.
