AS plans get under way to develop historic Guiseley Theatre into a 21st century arts venue, its amateur society has been packing out the auditorium with a glittering production of Crazy for You.

Guiseley Amateur Operatic Society took over running the theatre in the early 1980s and now members are planning its future.

“When GAOS took over we had members with all the skills required to run and maintain the building – builders, joiners, electricians, plumbers, painters and DIY-ers capable of doing whatever necessary to keep it in good repair,” says theatre spokesman John Waite. “A problem we have is the increasing age of those responsible for the bulk of running the theatre. We need new blood.

“We have ambitious plans which will be carried out in three phases: Phase one is refurbishing ground floor rooms to show what can be done to make the theatre more welcoming for community use. We have a grant from the Community Well Being Fund which, with matching funding from GAOS, has allowed to us to start this work.

“Phase two is a re-negotiation of the lease to at least 100 years, enabling us to apply for major funding, draw up plans and conduct a feasibility study. Phase three is to redevelop buildings at the rear of the theatre as an extension, incorporating disabled access, improved toilet facilities, a café bar and refurbished auditorium.”

At a recent open day more than 250 people turned out to see the plans. “We need practical help with day-to-day running but also support from architects, designers, fundraisers, promoters and finance people,” says John. “Guiseley Theatre is a unique asset for the community of Guiseley but it could be so much better. We aim to make it the best theatre and arts venue in the area.”

Guiseley’s production of Crazy for You, George and Ira Gershwin’s much-loved romantic comedy, features classic numbers such as I’ve Got Rhythm and Someone to Watch Over Me.

Sent by his wealthy mother to deliver a bank winding-up order and close the rundown Gaiety Theatre, the plot sees Bobby Child fall for theatre manager’s daughter, Polly Baker. The show is directed by Jamesine Cundell-Walker, with choreography by Ted Oxley-Kirk. The cast includes Matt Gardener as Bobby Child and Harriet Chaplin as Polly.
