REVIEW: End of an era as Players' last Alhambra show hits the heights

THIS is an emotional week for the Bradford Catholic Players, not least because of this tear-jerking Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.

The company has staged shows at the Alhambra for more than half a century, but Carousel is its final musical at the theatre.

And what a show! This lively, moving production breathes new life into the tale of tough carousel barker Billy Bigelow, whose romance with mill girl Julie Jordan runs far from smoothly. Falling on hard times, Billy’s attempt at a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn baby goes horribly wrong - but there’s a chance of redemption.

With an impressive set, featuring a revolving stage and pretty carousel, this is a hugely entertaining show brought nicely refreshed by director David Kirk.

Jacqui Drake’s slick choreography shone against numbers such as June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, Blow High, Blow Low and You’ll Never Walk Alone, and a fabulous cast was headed by Rob Edwards and Anna Clarke, with great performances from Alison Carroll, Michael Riley, Debbie Carroll and Jonny Tate.

A show that lingers after the curtain has fallen. Don’t forget your hankies.
