Bingley Little Theatre is taking a sideways look at the highs and lows of camping holidays in light comedy Canvas, running next week.

The contemporary comedy looks at the stresses and struggles of modern family life through the eyes of three couples on a camping holiday deep in the Welsh countryside.

Alan and Justine have been having problems, and hope that taking their children away camping will give them a good break. But it’s hard to keep secrets within cramped canvas walls, and their neighbours are a colourful group.

There’s bossy teacher Bridget, lovestruck Rory, suave, successful Alistair and his ‘perfect wife’ Amanda, and shambolic campsite owner Bronwyn. Together, they give Alan and Justine a holiday to remember – but one which threatens to make or break them.

Director Steve Mason says Canvas addresses “the precarious delights of glamping” while exposing the cracks in relationships.

“One of the thought-provoking themes of the play touches on the economy – some are still suffering while others live the high life. Also under scrutiny is what goes on behind the facade of three seemingly happy marriages.

“The humour mostly arises from the interaction between the couples.”

Canvas was written by Michael Wynne, who won a competition for new young writers run by the Royal Court Theatre with his first play, The Knocky, which he wrote while studying for a politics degree in London. He also wrote award-winning comedy The Priory and BBC1 Christmas film Lapland.

Steve has directed several plays in Ilkley, including The Railway Children, Frozen and Play it Again Sam last year. He was assistant director on Bingley Little Theatre’s production of Night Of The Iguana and he co-directed Good Things.

Canvas runs at Bingley Arts Centre from Monday to Saturday. For tickets, call (01274) 567983 or visit ticketsource.co.uk/ bingleyartscentre.
