Sugababes (pictured) – Sweet 7 (Island) *** It is sometimes hard to believe that the Sugababes have claimed more Top Ten singles than the Spice Girls, yet listening to their latest album, it really
isn’t that surprising. Sweet 7, like all their albums, adopts a slightly different attitude to the previous release, this time featuring a more Americanised style, largely due to contributions from
Sean Kingston, Ne-Yo and Beyonce’s writer Makeba. Beginning with the rambunctious Get Sexy, the album just about manages to stay consistent with both style and quality. Sweet 7 is also the first
album to feature newcomer Jade Ewan – it won’t be the last.

Asobi Seksu – Acoustic At Olympic Studios (Indian) *** I had never heard of Asobi Seksu, or even knew they had recorded three albums’ worth of material, but they have, and here it is. Going purely
on what I listened to on this album, you can tell the band are well-versed in crafting very melodic and chilled-out sounding music. It reminded me of some work by the Japanese artist Utada,
dreamlike and ethereal in places. This album is certainly one that will make you stare at a wall for an hour-or-so as you lose yourself. If these mellowed-out versions are anything to go by, it’s
probably well worth checking out their other stuff.

Taio Cruz – Rokstarr (Island) **** I was cagey about this album, not being a fan of music of the pop variety, but dare I say it, I was very impressed. Obviously the album includes his big hits such
as Take Me Back and Break Your Heart, but it’s when the album breaks away from the generic N Dubz pop-rap malarkey that it really begins to shine. There are elements of David Guetta, Timbaland and
Timberlake all thrown in. Some tracks are euphoric, others more soulful, but I believe his producing flair and influence is really carried in his lesser-known tracks. Cutting through all the hype,
there is a real weight of talent here, if this is your kind of thing.

Jay-Z – The Blueprint 3 (Rock Nation) Jay-Z is an artist who has put 13 years into hip-hop and continues to remain relevant while pushing 40. This is an almost unheard-of feat due to the constantly
changing climate of rap, which is controlled by the next dance craze or catchy hook that comes along. This is proved by the “new classic” that is Blueprint 3, the self-proclaimed God MC’s latest
release and the final instalment in the Blueprint series. Jay-Z, being who he is, has the mandatory tracks where he shows off his top-dog status. This album is Jay-Z realising the effect of time
and recognising he won’t always be on top.

Erik Hassle – Pieces (Island) HHHH Pieces is the debut album by the up-and-coming Swedish pop sensation Erik Hassle. A blend of uptempo tracks and slower, more gentle songs has enabled Hassle to
showcase his wide-ranging talent. Don’t Bring Flowers, Hassle’s debut single, is undoubtedly the best track on the album, combining catchy lyrics and a brilliant backing. The soon-to-be-released
Hurtful is another great song that was dubbed ‘amazing’ by NME, and is sure to catapult the 21-year-old to greater prominence.

Jamie Cullum – The Pursuit (Decca) This is Jamie Cullum’s fifth record in a genre-defying career that has entertained an ever-growing fan base across the globe since his first Verve record was
released in 2002. The title of the record is taken form Nancy Mitford’s classic novel, The Pursuit Of Love, and the songs on it are wonderfully eclectic as always, mixing modern influences with his
love of jazz and timeless standards. No-one can move from Cole Porter to Rihanna to Aphex Twin as boldly and deftly as Cullum does on The Pursuit. This compilation mixes heritage with a thrilling
selection of modern influences.

Maps – Turning The Mind (Universal Music) Maps mastermind James Chapman uses the brain’s reactions to chemical stimuli as inspiration for Turning The Mind. But the psychotropic themes don’t stop
there: The title of the album comes from the cognitive therapy practice of ‘mindfullness’, which takes negative thoughts and turns them into positive ones by accepting reality as it is. How do
these concepts translate to the dance floor? Well, let’s just say the musical results are pretty heady – this compilation of Maps songs will take the audience on a dark, electronic journey through
extreme mental states. I never was very good with maps, and I am certainly lost with this one.
