Think Gilbert O’Sullivan and you think of melodic songs with smart kitchen-sink lyrics – and oversized flat cap.

Regarded as one of the country’s most revered singers, songwriters and musicians, Gilbert is celebrating a 45-year recording career with the release of A Singer And His Songs – The Very Best Of Gilbert O’Sullivan.

The album is supported by a UK tour which rolls into Bradford this spring.

You can expect the gig to feature songs from his 1971 debut album Himself through to his most recent album Gilbertville. He had 14 top ten UK hits, including the multi-million selling and Grammy-nominated, Alone Again (Naturally), and the UK No 1 hits Clair and Get Down, for which he won Ivor Novello Awards for Best Song and Best Songwriter in 1973.

Gilbert’s songs have appeared in TV shows from The Simpsons to Life On Mars and in films such as Stuart Little.

His songs have been covered by the likes of Elton John, Bobby Darin, The Feeling, Nina Simone and Morrissey, who performed his version of Nothing Rhymed in a recent show in Dublin.

Gilbert O’Sullivan will be joined by his 11-piece band, including a string quartet, at St George’s Hall on Saturday, April 7. For tickets, ring (01274) 432000.
