INDIE rock band Fans are rooted in Bradford's New Wave music scene of the late 1980s and early 90s.

"It was a time when Bradford was the epicentre of a vibrant post punk/alt scene," says Matt Hawthorn, bassist with the Bradford three-piece. "It's hard to imagine these days, but people would travel from all over the country to play in bands here - bands like The Cult and New Model Army."

It was against this musical backdrop that Matt and Dan Louch, the vocalist and guitarist with Fans, grew up. Matt was living in a home music studio and had been on tour buses since he was five-years-old with his dad's band, Bradford-based Loud, while Dan's uncle played in bands around the district, and was chief songwriter and keyboard player in Tasmin Archer's band, writing her 1992 hit Sleeping Satellite.

Drummer Gabrielle Dardes completes the Fans line-up. He moved here from Italy and picked up the drums as a teenager after seeing The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.

FANS debut EP, Born Into, was released in September last year, produced and recorded by Matt Peel, who has worked with the likes of Eagulls and Pulled Apart By Horses. Current single Not In Love was added to Spotify's Fresh Finds playlist for May. The band have also become the darlings of the nation's music press, gaining acclaim in publications such as NME.

They have worked at the Abbey Road Studios in London, having their tracks mastered by acclaimed engineer and producer Christian Wright, who has worked with Coldplay, Blur, Ed Sheeran, Mumford and Sons, Radiohead, even Elvis Presley.

And with radio support from the likes of Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, who described them as one of the best new bands he'd come across, and Phil Taggart on Radio 1, a bright future beckons.

"We've been together just over two years and have released three singles and an EP," says Matt. "We've been touring the country over past year, with Kayvan Novak (co-creator and star of Channel 4 comedy Fonejacker), showing up to support us several times. He's a big fan of the band.

"We're spending the rest of the year touring and finishing off our debut album, due for release sometime in 2017."

In the meantime, Fans are set to play their first hometown gig, at The Underground, Duke Street in Bradford, on Saturday, July 23.
