Sarah's got Class

Sarah Class – A New Dawn (Glorious Technicolour) ***

In 2002, Sarah Class was nominated for best classical album at the BRIT Awards for her choral album Aurora. Now she has turned her hand to the more traditional fare of English folk music, producing an eight-track mini-album inspired by the natural world of the Isle of Wight where she grew up. It is lively, though not quite foot-stomping, where you can feel the passion that Sarah has for her subject matters. Accompanied by a host of other musicians, Sarah restricts herself to piano and vocals. Her singing voice is not the finger-in-one-ear folk style of yesteryear, nor quite the breathy style of many of her contemporaries. It’s just plain natural and inspired.

Various – Dreamboats & Petticoats: Summer Holidays (EMI) ****

This is a special summer edition of the hugely-popular series. Evoking the memory of seaside holidays past, the album comprises more than 60 tracks on two CDs of nostalgic, feelgood songs from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Included are classic summer tracks from Cliff Richard And The Shadows, the Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley and Billy Fury, along with lost favourites like Bobby Goldsboro’s Summer (The First Time), Remember (Walking In The Sand) by the Shangri-Las, and Patti Page’s Old Cape Cod. A real trip down memory lane for some of us.
