A PERFORMER and songwriter who shot to fame after forming the Commotions pop band will be entertaining discerning listeners in Bingley this month.

Commotions frontman Lloyd Cole will perform at Bingley Arts Centre, Bingley on Wednesday August 27.

Through his much-lauded work with the band, as well as his more eclectic solo efforts, Lloyd has established himself as one of the most articulate and acute songwriters of the post-punk era.

Born in 1961, in Buxton, Derbyshire, Lloyd Cole formed the Commotions in 1982 while studying philosophy at the University of Glasgow.

Originally a large soul band, the group eventually trimmed itself down to a quintet that included keyboardist Blair Cowan, guitarist Neil Clark, bassist Lawrence Donegan, and drummer Stephen Irvine.

The group's album Rattlesnakes stayed in the UK top 100 for a year, and the band also enjoyed chart success in Europe.

The Commotions released their final album, Mainstream, in 1987. This was received well by the critics, though performed less well in the record shops.

Lloyd moved to New York in 1988 and two years later he surprised his fans on a sell-out world tour by re-inventing himself as a dirty loud rock musician.

He then moved to New England and continued a solo career with Polydor/Capitol Records, later appearing on Rykodisc.

He has collaborated with artists such as the late Robert Quine, Fred Maher, Dave Derby and Jill Sobule. Information on all of Lloyd's upcoming gigs can be found at lloydcole.com

Doors for his Bingley performance open at 7.30pm and tickets will be at least £20. Visit bingleyartscentre.co.uk for details.
