Grab a late Greece deal
Canny British travellers are shrugging off fears of a eurozone meltdown and helping themselves to all-inclusive holidays in Greece which limit their exposure to any sudden changes in currency.
That’s the finding from discount holiday website Travelzoo, which says bookings for all-inclusive deals to Greece are up by more than 30 per cent despite “profound insecurity surrounding the eurozone, and contingency plans being put in place by some travel companies”.
But Travelzoo says the number of travellers prepared to book flight-only trips to Greece – where supply is rising as operators dump unwanted seats at the last minute – is falling by as much as 25 per cent compared with the first two weeks of May last year.
Travelzoo says ‘all-inclusive’ has now become the most searched-for term on its website, ahead of typical top terms such as Spain, Greece and Turkey.
This shows that consumers may be worried about independent travel and are putting value over destination as their top criteria in deciding which holiday to book.
Many top-end hotels and self-catering complexes in Greece and across Europe are also introducing all-inclusive deals for the first time.
Travelzoo European managing director Stephen Dunk says: “In the case of Greece, all-inclusive holidays offer added protection because consumers will not have to spend much in local currency should the drachma be reintroduced.
“Additionally, luxurious holidays that would otherwise be out of reach might become affordable again.
“It is a positive sign for the tourism industry that bookings for all-inclusive deals to Greece are up significantly, in spite of widespread speculation about the Greek economy and stability in the eurozone.
“The strong pound is likely to be a contributing factor, and with all-inclusive deals, people attempt to protect themselves ahead of their holidays and ring-fence the amount they are likely to spend.
“It is interesting to see that the more expensive hotels are working hardest to attract guests by offering value in the form of all-inclusive options. From what we see, destinations such as Greece recognise the need to attract overseas visitors and avoid having excess capacity in peak summer.”
Holiday bargains on Travelzoo include seven nights’ all-inclusive at the five-star Gelina Village Resort Corfu from £279 on selected dates until September from Gatwick, Stansted, Leeds Bradford, Sheffield, Bournemouth, Bristol, Birmingham and East Midlands.
Seven nights’ all-inclusive at the five-star Lindos Imperial Rhodes from £499 includes free room upgrade and a bottle of wine. This offer, in May and June, also includes flights from several airports.
