A Bradford teenager has been picked for a new boyband to star in a television show, after beating his brother at auditions.

Charlie Street and his brother Jake both auditioned for Mercia, a five-piece band starring in a six-part series, described as a British version of The Monkees.

Called X:Calibur – Brothers Of Mercia, the six-part comic book adventure, based on the Arthurian knights legend, is being filmed in the West Midlands and is due to be screened on TV next year.

The boy band was selected during an audition process run by the Creative Film Network in Wolverhampton, and Charlie, 15, was up against his brother Jake, 17.

Charlie landed a place in the band, but producer/director Alexanda Ried was so impressed with Jake he gave him the role of Charlie’s older brother in the show.

Charlie and Jake attended Stardom School for Performing Arts in Shelf. Their mother Jeni Street said they had been attending auditions together since they were young children.

“We didn’t feel like we were competing against each other because, either way, we would be thrilled if only one of us got the part. The fact that we both landed a role was just amazing,” said Jake, who has also landed a lead part in another film by the Creative Film Network, called Drag.

Charlie’s character is described as the daredevil of the show, aimed at teenagers, which is about a boy who hunts for his missing father, with the help of his friends and a computer called X:Calibur. Charlie stars alongside Charlie Blackwood, Tom Randle, Aaron Smith and Ben Westhead, and each episode focuses on a different band member.

The band has released a debut album, Brothers Of Mercia, featuring tracks by songwriters who have worked with acts like One Direction and Taylor Swift.

Charlie was in 2001 film Mam directed by actor Hugo Speer, who starred in The Full Monty, and as a child he appeared at the Alhambra playing Jeremy Potts in the UK tour of West End hit Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He has also appeared in TV commercials.
