PHOTOGRAPHER Martyn Sutcliffe went the extra mile - down a tunnel - to win a competition celebrating Bradford's becks.

The 30-year-old put on fishing waders to follow the course of Bradford Beck from Thornton Road underground down towards the Bowling end of the stream.

The result was this atmospheric shot which won him first place in the photographic contest organised by the Friends of Bradford’s Becks.

The sci-fi like shot caught the judging panel's eye and will now be one of 16 images of local becks to go on display in a new exhibition starting this Thursday at Bradford's Kirkgate Shopping Centre.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Mike Gibbons will be visiting it at 2pm on Saturday to present the prizes and the exhibition will end on Sunday, October 12.

Mr Sutcliffe, who lives in Windhill and works at an architect's office, has won £30, a voucher donated by ASDA and a framed photograph of his winning picture.

He said: "I have long been fascinated with the hidden course of the Beck. It was an important part of Bradford's history and much of it now lies hidden beneath the streets. I find it fascinating to visit these places that are rarely seen but hold so much importance to Bradford's past.

"I put on fishing waders to go into the tunnels and follow the course. I was really pleased with the finished image. It's great it won. I hope lots of people make time to go and look at the exhibition and find out what we've got on our doorstep."

The competition attracted a wide range of entries from photographs of Pinch Beck in Thornton to Bradford Beck in Shipley.

It was organised to encourage people to go out and photograph their local becks, with the judging done by the Bradford Photographic Society.

Chairman of Friends of Bradford’s Becks Barney Lerner said: "The photographs that people have sent us reflect the enormous variety that you can find in the local river network.

"It’s been really inspiring to see how much local people still value Bradford Beck and the other becks in the area."

Friends of Bradford’s Becks is a group of residents and interested ecologists who are keen to see the clean-up and eventual restoration of the Bradford Beck river system.
