Valentine’s Day is for couples and so is Michael Stewart’s latest book, a slim volume of darkly comic poems that explore the nature of co-dependency, that comes out on February 14.
Couples is a sequence of 12 paired poems that face each other across the page in much the same way that the couple on the front cover face each other a cross a cafe table.
Michael, who recently completed his latest play for BBC Radio 4 and submitted his Ph.D, put on a combined art show and reading from Couples at Thornton’s South Square Gallery last year.
Since then the sequence was picked up by Jamie McGarry’s Valley Press in Scarborough and is being published as a chapbook next Thursday.
Michael said: “A few years ago while editing a book of poetry I became mindful of the of the relationship between the left and right hand page of a book, of the two poems on either side. There they were, pressed up against each other, attached and yet separate.”
Michael will be reading from Couples at the New Inn, Thornton, on Thursday, February 14, from 7pm.
