Cartwright Hall Art Gallery's winter season, launched on Sunday, features new exhibitions from artists David Hockney and Sophie Ryder, as well as the return of a stunning Anish Kapoor sculpture to Bradford Museums' permanent collection.

The early stage of Hockney's career will be re-examined through a collection of items rarely seen in public, including large oil painting A View of Bradford from Earl's Court and works on paper from his time at Bradford School of Art.

The exhibition will also feature a small number of oils in his distinctive early style that have never been shown together before. There will also be etchings from two of his four major series of prints, A Rake's Progress and Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm, and a selection of memorabilia loaned by local people and Bradford Grammar School, where he was a pupil.

The winter season at Cartwright Hall also features Sophie Ryder's sculptures of lady hares, minotaurs and dogs, stalking the gallery as well as Lister Park.

The season will also include the re-installation of Anish Kapoor’s Turning The World Inside Out. The 1.5 tonne sculpture, a sphere cast in stainless steel, will sit alongside Francis Derwent Wood's Humanity Overcoming War.

The David Hockney and Sophie Ryder exhibitions will run until April 14. The Anish Kapoor exhibition will run until June 30.
