York is fortunate in its river network, with the Ouse and Foss running through the heart of the city.

They play an important part in the history of York, because without them there would not have been the Viking and Roman settlements, the legacy of which attract thousands of tourists every year.

York Festival Of The Rivers, from July 11 to 26, features everything from musicals to photography, walks to dancing, swimming and Dragon Boat racing.

And pirates might once again be visiting York – long boats will be lining the Ouse and other water-based activities will be taking place.

There will be fun days, competitions, charity fundraising and exhibitions.
