EAST RIDDLESDEN Hall is offering a packed autumn programme in Keighley.

The National Trust-owned manor house is laying on atmospheric events for both Halloween and the run-up to Christmas.

There will be fun for families and educational activities for adults at the 17th century hall and its two historic barns.

There will be creepy Halloween fun on the two weekends of October 22, 23, 29 and 30, from 1pm to 2pm.

A spokesman said: “Join us for spooky stories in a dimly-lit room, and listen to the creeks and groans of this 400-year-old haunted house.

"Find out what revolting remedies like spiders webs and woodlice were used for.

“You can also let your creative imagination run wild and write your very own spells to cast, then finish off by making a witch or wizard's hat for you to fly off around the garden and follow our pumpkin trail."

There will be two Halloween parties in the historic Airedale Barn on Sunday, October 30, with music, dancing, face painting and crafts.

A child's ticket will also include a hot dog, scary bun and unlimited juice.

Sessions run from 2pm to 4pm, and 5pm to 7pm. Booking is essential.

Putting the House to Bed for Winter is the title of a session running on seven dates between November 5 and 27, from 11.30am to 12.15pm.

A spokesman promised the curious look behind the scenes on how staff prepare the old house and its historic collections for the closed period.

She said: “The winding down process starts for the colder, darker months, which for our conservation team is where the work begins.

“Take a tour around the house; explore some of the rooms which will be empty of contents and those whose contents are draped in cloth.”

East Riddlesden Hall promises Festive Fun with Father Christmas on weekends between December 3 and 18, from 11am to 11.45am.

The Great Hall will host singing, dancing, games and a present from Santa Claus, and families can follow a festive trail around the gardens and make a Christmas decoration to hang on their own tree.

Visitors are advised to dress for the weather and wrap up warm because the hall can get cold in winter.

Most East Riddlesden Hall events are free with the normal admission price, but the Father Christmas visit costs an extra £7 per child. Call 0344 2491895 for further information and to book places.
