PROUD Yorkshire folk can celebrate the glory of the Broad Acres at a host of different events across the Bradford district.

Yorkshire Day will be marked by a street party in Bradford's North Parade, where residents will celebrate the county on Saturday, August 1, between 11am and 8pm.

The free event will also highlight the independent businesses on North Parade and visitors can sample beers from companies including Ilkley Brewery and Saltaire Brewery.

Live music will come from acts including Nervous 'Orse, Hoodoo Operators and Rubber Kazoo at the party.

Les Hall, owner of the Sparrow Bier Cafe, who has helped organise the street party, said: "I think its important to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

"I am Bradford born and bred, which makes me Yorkshire through and through. We need to keep these sort of events alive.

"People are proud to come from Yorkshire and there is a lot to be proud of.

"It will be a fun event. It's not just for Yorkshire Day but it is also to celebrate."

Meanwhile, Saltaire Visitor Information Centre will be offering free samples of Yorkshire produce, including lemon tarts and Wensleydale cheese, donated by shops around the village to honour the day, on Saturday, August 1.

Other activities and competitions will be taking place over the weekend of August 1 and 2 for visitors to take part in for free. These include a children's wordsearch, picture quiz and quiz to test people's knowledge of Yorkshire.

Those who score the highest marks across the weekend have a chance to win prizes including gift vouchers for a Saltaire cafe, Yorkshire-themed goodie bags and Yorkshire memorabilia.

Iram Altaf, Saltaire Visitor Information Centre assistant, says the village will be taken over by the Yorkshire Day celebrations at the centre between 10am and 5pm on both days.

She said: "As it falls on the weekend this year, hopefully we will have plenty of tourists stopping by.

"We will hopefully have bunting and Saltaire will be completely taken over by Yorkshire Day.

"We have been celebrating it for the last two years."

In Bradford, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, will read out the Yorkshire Day Declaration on the steps of City Hall at noon on August 1. This will be followed by a Yorkshire Day lunch in the Banqueting Hall.

In Ilkley, a declaration will be read by the Town Crier Isabel Hogan at the railway station in Station Plaza. Other events include classic cars on The Grove, to help kick off the Ilkley Summer Festival.

Bradford Brewery will mark Yorkshire Day with a beer and food festival weekend. It will take place at the Simes Street pub site on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2, from noon on both days.

It includes Yorkshire Beers, street food and a Yorkshire quiz.
