A PINK flood of nearly 1,000 runners completed a 5k Race for Life in Ilkley today and raised valuable funds to help the fight against cancer.

The group of dazzling women and girls set off from East Holmes Field at 10.30am and completed the race in good time, said delighted Cancer Research UK area event manager Sarah Threadgall.

"We had about 980 participants and everyone did it successfully without taking too long.

"There was a bit of drizzle at the start, but that soon dried up and actually kept things nice and cool for the runners.

"The atmosphere was terrific and there was lots of support from family and friends.

"These events are always really supportive as everyone doing them has had cancer themselves or is connected to someone how has.

"And we always celebrate the last person back from the race as much as we do the first," she said.

Miss Threadgall, 24, was just 12-years-old when her mum Liz was diagnosed with breast cancer at 50.

She had a mastectomy, then underwent chemotherapy, and radiotherapy and took part in clinical trials to help research.

But in September 2008 her mother was told the cancer had come back and had spread to her throat and her brain, by the end of the following August the former West Yorkshire Police worker was admitted to St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, where she died.

“Race for Life is so incredibly important to me and I feel really lucky to now be able to organise events which leave me feeling inspired to help others," Miss Threadgall said.
