THIS year’s Bradford Animation Festival at the National Media Museum marks the 60th anniversary of Animal Farm, Britain’s first animated feature-length film.

This year is also the 100th anniversary of the birth of Joy Bachelor, who played a big part in the production of the film.

Vivien Halas, Bachelor’s daughter, will speak about her mother on November 19 during a special event at the festival.

The film, based on George Orwell’s fable about political tyranny, was made between 1951 and 1954, using more than 25,000 drawings and 1,000 colour backgrounds, and took around 300,000 hours of work.

Illustrator and animator Bachelor also wrote co-wrote hundreds of scripts, commercials wartime propaganda, education and entertainment films.
